About Stan

My love of teaching music spans more than three decades and stems from a love of music as well as a passion for teaching and a deep appreciation of the many values and benefits of qualified music instruction. I began teaching privately full time within months after graduating summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music in 1981. Although I have performed extensively since that time it is music education that has remained my true career focus.

I love working with students of all ages and in all styles of music, but not only for the musical skill and knowledge I impart. I work hard to ensure that students develop confidence, poise, an ability to set and achieve goals, and a love of self expression that will last throughout their entire lives. Whether a student is learning piano, guitar, or voice, I teach them all they need to know about music, their instrument, and the attainment of excellence in a style that is personalized, engaging, and empowering. I never work from preset "methods." Each lesson is customized to capitalize on each student's unique talents, abilities, and interests.

Although I offer some at-home availability, the majority of my sessions are conducted at my spacious, well-appointed studio in Coventry, RI. The facility is comfortable, with plenty of space for parents to sit in, if they choose to do so. It is also very quiet; there are no other lessons on the premises, which allows for greater concentration and understanding.

I greatly look forward to hearing from you and having the opportunity to help you or your child achieve mastery in this most wonderful and fulfilling form of self-expression!

My three+ decades of full-time experience as a private music educator, my degree from one of the world's most prestigious music colleges, and my true love and enthusiasm for teaching has given me a lifetime of success in the lives of my students. Many have gone on to careers in professional music and two are even Grammy nominees/winners. But for most it has simply been a lifetime of enrichment and enjoyment that they have been able to share with many people in their own lives. This, I feel is my greatest contribution; one that I am sure will make a difference in your life as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I received a B.M. from Berklee College of Music, summa cum laude, from Berklee College of Music in 1981. I was the composer-in-residence for the RI All-Star Jazz Ensemble and many other performance groups. I have also taught composition and songwriting to many individuals including professional performers and two Grammy nominees/winners.

Guitar

I have studied guitar. I have performed extensively throughout southern New England in may jazz, rock, and theater ensembles.

Piano

I received my B.M. from Berklee College of Music, where I studied piano. I have been instructing students of all ages on this instrument since 1982.

Songwriting

After receiving my bachelor of music degree in jazz composition from Berklee College of Music in 1981, I spent the next five years as the primary songwriter for the Rhode Island rock band "Curio." I have also taught songwriting to many students since 1982, many of whom have gone on to perform their music publicly and record their music for national distribution. Throughout my career, I have written, recorded, and performed hundreds of original songs in a variety of genres and venues.
