I have been passionate about writing since I was very young. In sixth grade, I remarked to my English teacher that I wanted to grow up to be just like her. In college, I turned both of these passions into a reality and majored in Secondary Education and English. My experience with writing and literature in my personal life and throughout college range from dabbbling in detective literature, American literature like Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Henry James, and more, young adult literature (one of my personal favorites), Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Beowulf and Odysseus, essay writing, prose, note-taking and study guides, and creative writing including a collection of poetry from the last twelve years that I am trying to publish. I can assist in these areas and others, including but not limited to grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, reading strategies, and study skills.
If you are a student struggling in English or your children are having trouble in any of these areas from beginner reading skills and basic comprehension to college writing techniques and test prep, I would be eager and excited to work with you to help raise grades and confidence... even develop an interest in our beautiful language! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified Secondary English teacher for grades 7-12 and am able to adapt to the needs of elementary-aged students or higher-level learning, as well.
The goals of the English content area encompass an abundance of skills that can be of use in all subject areas, such as note-taking, reading comprehension, analyzing text, writing, etc. If you do not have one of these specific goals or areas in mind, I would label our work as English-related if your needs fall into any of these categories or more and you will find that developing these skills further will aid in other areas of life and school like a Social Studies essay, Science notes, or a business class in college.
Basic grammar skills are essential during your learning career and into the business world and, often, will determine to whether or not you will get hired. Just about every aspect of the business world involved some type of writing, even if it is simply emails. While content is critical, the first glaringly obvious mistakes involve grammatical errors from punctuation to sentence structure. In the age of text messaging, many of us have to force ourselves to recall proper grammar skills and make a habit of using them on a daily basis... so we do not LOSE them!
As a tutor, I will be sure to drill you on them and make sure you not only learn them, but they stay fresh, memorable, and vivid in your mind.
Who and what are you reading in school? How does learning about the author help you understand the text? What is the point of analyzing the text, discussing it deeper, asking questions about it, or, better yet, writing about it? Why read literature at all? How do I make sense of the author's writing style in order to understand what I'm even reading?
I will help you tackle these questions and others and even read the text along side you whenever possible.
My Dad was never a great speller and I bought him a shirt once that read jokingly, "Bad spellers of the world untie." Did you catch how to change that mistake? The serious truth in our age of technology is that once you put a "status" or blog post out into cyber space your words immediately impact how the world views you. If your spelling is wrong and, quite possibly, your sentence no longer makes sense like the above example, you come off looking stupid to the outside world, when you have some much to offer to others. This holds true once you are working for a company who may ask you to work on their website or do marketing for them because then your company will be judged based upon your skills.
I will work with you to set goals and move forward with flash cards, quizzes, acronyms and helpful phrases to help remember the positioning of letters. The English language often attempts to confuse us and we can work together to tackle silent letters and stretching out frustrating words.
We all need to be constantly building our vocabularies whether we are in elementary school or have doctorate degrees. We can practice building vocabulary skills from learning what to do and where to look when you don't recognize a word to putting into practice upon learning the definition and use.
