About Hiro

I have over fifteen years of experience in teaching Japanese to high school students, university students and young professionals. Many of them are planning to take JLPT so I have been helping them work on N5-N1 levels.

Originally my friends asked me to teach them some Japanese when I was living in Tokyo more than 15 years ago, and that's how I started it. When I moved to NYC I had several students to tutor for their Japanese classes and exams as well as some young professionals who needed to use Japanese at work. I also taught three classes of 75 students for conversation and grammar at a university for 2 years as part of my teaching assistantship.

One of the strengths that I believe I have and my students tell me, compared to some other Japanese teachers, is that I can explain and describe Japanese words and grammar points successfully using multiple examples in English. I also give extra information on each grammar or new word so you know how to use them properly in real life.

I would like my students to practice speaking and listening as much as possible during the lesson, so I usually don't spend a lot of time on giving a lecture on grammar points. Instead, each student is expected to read grammar points that I give each week as part of homework, and I answer questions the student may have in the next lesson. Then we do lots of practice for speaking and listening using new vocabularies and grammar points in a textbook as well as a workbook to work on their pronunciation and intonation. I am constantly correcting their pronunciation and intonation so they can sound more fluent and natural.

I enjoy the human interaction with the students. If the student is really willing to learn the language, it really motivates me to do more and better.

I teach both in person and via skype.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
