On December 14, 2014 I returned to the United States after a 2 1/2 year stint as an English Composition and Literature professor at al-Quds Bard Honors College in the Occupied West Bank of Palestine. As a full-time faculty lecturer, I taught three courses a semester, mainly in English Comp, though some of my most cherished courses remain a creative writing poetry course on borders and a Latin American modernist literature course that had my students thinking about "literature" in non-traditional ways.

Fully in love with my job, I reluctantly left in order to take advantage of a great opportunity to publish my first full-length book of poetry with &Now Books of Lake Forest College. I've always considered myself a poet—even if it's not the first thing I write down on my job applications! With my twenties almost gone and with an extensive travel list under my belt, some of my accomplishments include:

a Hartog Endowed Travel Grant for Independent Study I used to travel to Spain and translate a book of Spanish poetry

a 360 Xochi Quetzal Artist Residency I received to write poetry in Chapala, Mexico

a residency from ADM-PIRA to make work and write poems in Mexico City

poetry readings I've given in Vienna, Austria; Beirut, Lebanon; New York City; and Chicago

independent publications I've written and published in Lebanon, Mexico, Cyprus, and the United States

and most importantly, the 2014-15 Madeleine Plonsker Emerging Writer Residency Prize I received for the publication of my book.

Currently, I am living in my hometown in the Rio Grande Valley, where I'm completing my book. I am also part of the faculty of the Language & Thinking program of Bard College in New York. This seasonal job takes place for three weeks during the month of August and is a prerequisite for prospective incoming freshman. During this program, I teach three 1 ½ hour sessions a day using a pedagogy inspired by the theories of Peter Elbow, which stress writing in the classroom as a mode of inquiry and form of thinking in itself. Part of my duties include weekly one-on-one conferences with my students in order to assess their portfolios that are composed of writings they have written either in class or as part of homework. The program culminates in an essay that undergoes multiple revisions before receiving my narrative evaluation that also incorporates feedback on their overall progress throughout the course. Due to the intensive nature of the program, weekly faculty meetings also occur, where faculty members track student progress and discuss the implementation of L&T’s curriculum.

As you can surmise, I've developed a keen eye for both academic and creative writing, and I can assure you that your time with me will be invaluable. My teaching style is relaxed and natural, and I stress open conversations and brief, goal-oriented writing prompts during tutoring sessions in order to break from habitual forms of thought and intellectual dogmas. I love working with people of all ages and I look forward to working with you!
