UPR RUM (English Literature)
UPR RUM (Graduate Coursework)
I was born in Puerto Rico on October 29th, 1991 and was raised in the town of Manati. Went to Catholic school (Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Vega Baja) until 6th grade which I started in Piaget Bilingual Academy where I stayed at until graduating High School in 2009. From there, I reached my dream of enrolling in the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez campus with the goal of getting a bachelor's in computer engineering. This changed when I was in my second year when I realized my passion didn't really lie in programming or working with electronics; instead I fell in love with some elective courses I took in education and decided to pursue that instead. I joined the English department and focused on Literature with the goal of earning my Teacher's licence and help the future generations of my island learn the importance of learning a second language and understanding the doors it can open for them.
I graduated from the U.P.R.M. in 2015 and found my first gig as a full time teacher the following semester as a Middle School Teacher in a private school in Mayaguez. Here, I got hands on experiences in dealing with my own group of students instead of getting textbook examples and managed to successfully execute my teaching philosophy. Dealing with both "regular" students and those with learning disabilities, I managed to use creativity, current events and my student's experiences and aspirations to help them overcome the difficulties they had when it came to their grammar and conversational skills as well as led the Spelling Club into their second shot at winning the island's National Spelling Bee competition. Needless to say, it was a very busy year full of bumps on the road but it was a very productive and fulfilling one.
The following summer, I married my lovely wife (the love of my life) and found a cozy apartment to call home along with a rescued kitten and from here, I work as both an online and in-person tutor.
Thanks to my experiences I am fluent in both English and Spanish. I am currently 25 years old and have about two years worth of English and Science teaching under my belt but over 10 when it comes to tutoring. Ever since I was in eighth grade, I would make study groups with my friends and would help them overcome the difficulties they had with Math, Science and English all the way until my first year of college.
I am open to meeting with any student whether in their house or a public setting for English classes (grammar, essay editing, conversational skills, reading comprehension, etc.) regardless of the grade. As for Science and Math, I am confidently available for up to Middle School level. I live in the Mayaguez area but am willing to travel if necessary. Feel free to write to me and I will get back to you as soon as humanly possible. Thank you for giving me shot, and I promise I won't disappoint. Have a great day! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I gave class to a group of 1st graders as well as a group of 2nd graders for a semester and part of my duties was to help students improve their handwriting since many of them had difficulties identifying differences between some of the letters in the alphabet.
