About Melissa N.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and currently have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.

During my studies at the university, I took a variety of courses in writing and literature which have given me a basic understanding of such. Besides those courses, I was the Editor-in-Chief for the Love of Writing, Arts, and Creativity Newsletter, as well as interned for “Esta Vida Boricua” as a Copy Editor, which helped improve my editing skills as well as my people skills.

In the past year, I have been given the opportunity to work at one of the Islands top Bilingual schools, as a Middle School and High School History teacher.

I have also had the opportunity to work as an English teacher at the Colegio Presbiteriano Pablo Casasús. Throughout the years, I have been given the opportunity to aid the students, fortify their grammatical and language skills, by having them write essays, as well as introduce them to the novel, in order to enhance their curriculum.

As a teacher, I encourage students to think critically and learn to form their own opinions on the topic that is being presented. I believe working with others, may it be my students or my co-workers, is a valuable asset in order to complete task's at hand and I truly enjoy it.

Thanks to those courses and the experience I have gained not only through my studies but throughout this past year, I have acquired a valuable set of skills that I am sure can be useful, to help others reach their academic achievements.

Throughout the years, I have been given the opportunity to aid the students, fortify their grammatical and language skills, by having them write essays, as well as introduce them to the novel, in order to enhance their curriculum. As an English Literature Major, we are taught to look beyond what is written and try to see in depth what the author is saying.

However as a teacher, I encourage students to think critically and learn to form their own opinions on the topic that is being presented. As a teacher, I've always encouraged my students to write essays no matter the subject. I believe writing gives students the opportunity to show what they have learned without the pressure of academic testing, I also believe that writing essays can help students better prepare for their SAT's and college courses. Before graduating I was able to create a very distinct writing organization that not only helped students develop the necessary skills needed to complete their pieces, but also provided a way for them to publish it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
