I have taught special education inclusion and resource for 6 years, and also homeschooled a child in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade curriculum to prepare him for the SSAT. My former schools were in Atlanta, Charlotte, and NJ, and I taught in all grades K-5. While my Master's degree is in special education, I have taught and tutored students of all abilities, ranging from below grade level to those students designated as gifted. The special needs of my former students with IEPs included ADHD, learning disabilities (including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and language), autism, EBD, ID, and OHI. During my last year of teaching in Atlanta, I co-taught a fifth grade class with a mixture of students with IEPs, "typical" students, and gifted students, which really helped me develop my differentiation skills! I have experience teaching the following curricula and programs: Common Core, Handwriting Without Tears, 6 Traits Writing, Daily 5, CAFE, Everyday Mathematics, Orton-Gillingham, SRA Reading Mastery, and more.

In addition to teaching, I tutored several days a week after school and during the summer. I love tutoring because it allows me to follow through on what is taught in the classroom, address issues before they become huge problems, and teach skills that might not be directly taught at school (like studying, outlining, or time management). My favorite thing to tutor is homework, because often I find that students are not remembering what was taught in class, or didn't understand the original explanation. When I tutor, I can catch misconceptions and also reteach things in different ways or using shortcuts to help my students "get it". I also like to coordinate and communicate with kids' classroom teachers so I can make sure everyone is on the same page, to avoid confusing kids. I am a certified classroom level educator in the Orton-Gillingham method, and am happy to share my certificate if that is important!

I have a strong grasp of English conventions, mechanics, and writing genres. Vocabulary is a strong point for me, and I enjoy teaching it using the Frayer Method, Flocabulary, and lots of visual and kinesthetic methods! When I took the SAT I and SAT II myself, I scored a 760/800 on the Verbal section and 780 on the Writing, respectively.

I have administered many standardized tests, including the CogAT, ITBS, and Georgia's new state test based upon the Common Core Curriculum. At my previous school, I developed a test-taking skills protocol, taught it to the staff, and helped implement it within all classrooms first grade and higher. I teach kids how to approach tests calmly and with confidence by helping them learn strategies to narrow down choices, recall information, and improve their chances of choosing the correct answers- whether they actually know the answers or not. These strategies are based upon what my own professional SAT tutor taught me back in high school, and they have served me well through grad school.

I would love to meet you and talk about tutoring. I want to know what you like, what you're good at, and what you want to do better. We'll talk about your goals and make up a plan together in order to make those goals happen! We're going to have to work hard, but we'll have as much fun as possible along the way.

I have tutored several children who have very poor study and time-management skills. I have worked with each child to make visuals, calendars, and personal strategies that help them be successful. This is based upon what I learned while earning my teaching degrees, as well as when earning my gifted education certification last year. I am very familiar with the different types of learners (kinesthetic, visual, natural, auditory, etc.), and therefore am adept at finding strategies and solutions that fit each individual.
