Many learning problems are confidence issues that stem from missing fundamentals. As a result, I work to return that confidence by breaking advanced concepts down to their basic parts and rebuilding self-esteem with new and improved skill sets.

With over 20 years teaching and tutoring experience, and clients that range in age from four to 74, I am confident in my abilities to help you or your child succeed in whatever subject is causing stress and struggle. As a parent of a teenager, I recognize that tutors come and go, but parents are in the trenches doing homework and meeting with teachers. They need to know how they can help when the tutor is not around. As a result, I am willing to work as much with parents of struggling students as the students themselves.

Fractions and decimals and number lines, oh my! I have had great success helping students skip-count their way to understanding multiplication tables. I bring manipulatives (blocks, play money, anything countable) so students have better number sense. My students all express more confidence from the first lesson, and see a letter grade improvement in three months.

My college degree is in English literature with minors in Secondary Education and Political Science. I am a passionate reader of children's and YA fiction. Not only that, but I'm a self-published author of books for all ages, including a book on grammar and writing! For the past two summers, I have helped young people write, illustrate, and publish their own books on Amazon. Through this process, I've been able to sneak in all sorts of lessons in writing and grammar. The experience has been awesome all-around!

I know what young people are reading these days, in part because my son and his friends are bringing new books to my attention all the time. I do story-times and workshops to promote writing and my books, and those students share their love of books with me. Moreover, those who are too cool to write realize that they have stories to share. When I make that possible, I hook students and they become writers. Children whose teachers (or parents) expect to give me a hard time don't. They like working with me and it shows.

As for ESL/ESOL, I have specific experience working for Obunsha (a Japanese learning academy in Kentucky), spent a year teaching ESL with Americorps in Arkansas, and spent another year teaching ESL with the Ozark Literacy Council in Arkansas.

I haven't been in Pennsylvania very long, so a lot of people here are just now getting to know me. I teach writing workshops on occasion, but it's only spreading via word of mouth. So I have time to devote to tutoring you or your child.

If you or your child need tutoring, you may not realize I do both. I teach people over subject matter, but it all gets done. I firmly believe it works because students who believe in themselves ask better questions and work harder to continue to improve themselves. The proof is in my students who continually graduate at the top of their classes, attend college on scholarship, and whose parents still write to me thanking me years after our tutoring relationship has ended.

The problem with being a really good tutor is that students only need me for a short time and then outgrow me. So I'm constantly looking for new students I can help. Teaching is a privilege and a passion. Won't you contact me to schedule a lesson and see for yourself?
