For the past 14 years I have been a Special Education teacher in the School District of Philadelphia. I have a Certificate II in Special Education and also in Middle Years English, and am also rated Highly Qualified to teach High School English, Math Science and Social Studies. I am also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and have extensive experience treating children with AD/HD, ODD, Aspergers and the broad range of Autistic Spectrum disorders. We hired Marc to help our son with ADHD with writing. Marc used that time very inefficiently by lecturing about about his approach, repeating himself many times with the same anecdotes about the same one or two of his clients. He also performed reading and math evaluations during that time, even though we told him repeatedly that we were interested in tutoring for our son's writer's block. We could have easily provided any information he needed about our son's academic performance in subjects other than writing without the need for additional evaluation at cost to us. Most importantly, we tried repeatedly to explain our needs, and he kept lecturing about his approach without any indication that he was listening to us. When he worked with our son to help him with a writing assignment, we heard him using some good strategies, but we were largely disappointed. Marc repeatedly did not listen to our son's attempts to explain that the assignment was to write a poem based on a memory, and thought it was an essay assignment until about halfway through the time. Overall, we felt that it was not a good use of our time and money.
I am so blessed to have met Mr. Marc. He is a wonderful, understanding, knowledgeable tutor. He has helped me with my math skills and study skills for nursing school as well as provided much advice along the way. I don't know how I would have made it this far into the semester without him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
