I received my MFA in art with a concentration in glass from San Jose State Univ. Yes! I'm a glassblower. My minor and other love was history. I later returned to S.J.S.U. and earned an MA in Sculpture. I have had an exciting and successful career as an artist. It has given me the opportunity to travel, work, and study across the country and abroad. As a grad student I tutored undergrads in history and geography.
I later earned a teaching credential. For 22 years I taught public school at the middle school and elementary level. I most enjoyed teaching history, geography, and writing (especially poetry). I enjoy teaching at all levels and passing on my passion and love of learning.
I have recently retired and have begun to resurrect my art career. However, I miss "seeing the light go on" as student grasp a concept or skill.
I have had 20 years experience teaching math. I believe in making sure students have mastered their basic operations. After doing so I present them with projects and challenges where thy can demonstrate their mastery of these skills. I am a strong proponent of Project Based Learning.
I have always loved teaching American history, Geography, and Social Studies. American History is the story of our lives, our families, our communities, and our country. Geography teaches us about our planet, and how to know where we are on it. Social Studies helps us know who we are, and how we got here.
I have a broad knowledge of Art History. Art History is the history of mankind in man-made objects. Art History studies the discoveries and accomplishments of previous artists and civilizations.. When teaching art I always have my students study the art of many different styles and cultures. I also have an extensive personal art library.
My strategy as a tutor is to develop a program for my students geared to their individual learning style. I work hard to make my lessons productive, while being fun and exciting. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
