About Krissi

“Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.”? Parker J. Palmer, The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life

My primary objective in tutoring and teaching is to assist students in developing their critical thinking skills, their communication and writing skills, and their own self-directed learning techniques through collaborative, creative, and practical instruction methods. I completed my graduate education (Master of Arts in Ministry, Leadership Studies, graduating with high honors) at Capital Seminary and Graduate School, formerly known as Lancaster Bible College. My Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts, depth in English and Communications, degree was completed through Excelsior College (formerly known as Regents College, The University of the State of New York).

I have a unique background that includes both instructional and editorial management experience. These opportunities have given me practical insight both in the classroom and in the publishing industry. I am then able to offer students a perspective on the language arts and tools that will truly facilitate their secondary learning while sharpening their personal skills for college and the workplace. My teaching and advising history includes the following:

August 2009-April 2010—Electives Instructor, Elfers Christian School, New Port Richey, FL
Fall 1998-Spring 1999—English Instructor, Elfers Christian School, Elfers, FL
Fall 1996-Fall 1997—Visiting Lecturer, Corning Community College, Corning, NY
•Taught freshman composition courses and college preparation courses
Spring 1996-Spring 1998—English Instructor, Notre Dame High School, Elmira, NY
•Taught language arts, including British literature, creative writing, public speaking, and journalism
Fall 1993-Spring 1995—Writing Lab Tutor, Corning Community College, Corning, NY
•Tutored individual students and peer groups in college’s writing center
•Specialized in tutoring students with special needs
•Taught writing workshops

Additionally, my experience in the publishing industry as an editor and writer is as follows:
September 2013-August 2014—Online Quality Assurance Assistant, Lancaster Bible College, Lancaster, PA
•Assisted in creating and deploying online courses and related content
•Coordinated course materials to ensure that all content would be successfully deployed when course launched
•Collaborated with course developers to create features and creative presentation of curriculum to enhance students’ learning experiences
•Researched and initiated necessary corrections and improvements to course materials
•Edited primarily graduate-level courses
November 2010-Present—Freelance Editor, Lancaster, PA
Editing of projects for college publications, including alumni magazines and self-study reports for grant funding and accreditation
June 2002-April 2008—Acquisitions and Managing Editor, Green Key Books, Holiday, FL
•Managed all editorial projects, including pre-production schedules, assignments, and deadlines
•Contracted outsourced editing agencies and sub-contractor network and managed author relations
•Edited in-house projects and those acquired from outside authors
•Wrote marketing copy, including ad and cover copy
June 1999-June 2002—Editor, Practical Christianity Foundation/Green Key Books, Holiday, FL
•Edited in-house projects and those from external acquisitions
•Served as contributing writer to various projects
Fall 1995-Fall 1998—Freelance writer, Elmira, NY
•Worked as a subcontractor for a local writing agency, which serviced local corporations and organizations, including Corning Incorporated and Corning Community College
•Wrote motivational corporate pieces, brochures, and articles for newsletters and newspapers

I would love the opportunity to work with your student in building his or her skills and, ultimately, in fostering an appreciation for learning, specifically in relation to writing and the language arts. My hope is to partner with students so that they can better know themselves and become effective communicators.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
