"Children want the same thing we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, to be delighted." - Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss hit the nail on the head! My job as a teacher is not to just "fill the vessel" of a child's mind with information, but rather to engage their curiosity, challenge their brains, believe in their abilities, and fall in love with learning. I have always been a teacher at heart - my childhood stuffed animal collection can attest to that! However in my adult life, I have enjoyed spending the past 5 years teaching elementary school students to challenge and believe in themselves and develop a love for learning that will last a lifetime.
Some important things about my teaching qualifications:
I am a certified elementary teacher in New York State (1-6) and Pennsylvania (K-6). I have a Master's degree in Elementary Education from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. I taught Kindergarten for two years in Brooklyn and 2nd grade for three years in Manhattan. I have experience teaching in all elementary subject areas and have excellent behavior management skills.
I have experience teaching all aspects of reading (comprehension, grammar, phonics, guided reading, writing, and more) to children of all abilities from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Specific programs I have experience teaching are Fundations and Reading Mastery (phonics) and Engage NY (literacy). In my classroom, I strive for a "balanced literacy" approach, meaning that I incorporate teaching phonics as well as providing hands-on reading experiences with a variety of text types.
I am an expert on 2nd grade Literacy and Math Common Core standards, as they have been the driving force for my instruction to my second grade students for the past three years.
I am certified in both New York State and Pennsylvania to teach elementary school. I also hold a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Temple University.
I have experience teaching two Phonics programs: Fundations and Reading Mastery. However, I have experience teaching phonics skills in a variety of ways through using learning centers and games, hands-on experiences with books, and through writing.
I am a skilled and passionate urban educator who would love to help your child fall in love with learning, challenge their amazing brains, and build their confidence as a life-long learner. What I learned tonight in our first session was that all of the content that I have learned years ago is still there. I just need to continue practicing and with Christina's help, I will be prepared for my exams. I really appreciate our session tonight. Her knowledge of the subject area, her supportive and passionate spirit for helping me achieve my goals was infectious.
Christina review with my 8 year old daughter for her math test tomorrow. My daughter seem confident and well prepared.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
