About Leslie

My degree is in English, with a minor in Psychology from the University of Alabama, but my years of homeschooling, private tutoring and college level tutoring have given me a versatility in other subjects.
I have worked with students of all ages and abilities, including EAL students from eight countries.
I have also been a success coach for college, which means that I can work to improve your student's study strategies and testing skills. The key to productive tutoring is to realize that " one size does not fit all" for students. Since learning styles and strengths are unique for each student, so are my methods. The best part of my job is working with the students individually and helping them realize their capabilities. Working with parents and setting goals is also an important factor for success!
I enjoy watching my students succeed! I am a professional writer and certified editor (American Copy Editors Society) and am familiar with various style guides (MLA, APA, AP, Chicago (Turabian)), so I love to proofread papers. I am here to help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Test prep and strategies

ACT Reading

Getting ready for the ACT doesn't have to be difficult. Learning composition, grammar, vocabulary and test skills puts you ahead of the game. Practice makes perfect!

American History

History sometimes is perceived as a bunch of dates, but it is also events that shape our lives. Our current living conditions are a direct result of our history. Why are we the country we are today? American history tells you!

Biology

Biology is a study of systems, large and small and processes that occur in these systems. Learning the language of biology is a first step to success, then understanding how all these living systems, plant and animal, work together.

Elementary Math

Math can be so fun and there can be so many ways to learn it. In Elementary Math, there are a lot of interesting topics: fractions, decimals, division, subtraction, just to name a few. Let's find the way that works for you!

Elementary Science

From biology to earth science, I can make science fun for your elementary student. From my experience of teaching homeschool science in a co-op setting, I can help make this subject fascinating through different learning experiences.

English

English has many components: vocabulary, grammar, composition, and literature. Skills in all these areas help your student be an excellent reader and writer.

Grammar

Good grammar is an asset to everyone who has it. Knowing the rules makes writing and speaking easier.

Literature

Everyone loves a good book, or do they? If you struggle with understanding the nuances of a novel, or strategies of a story, the setting, characters, plot or theme, help is here.

Proofreading

Having my degree in English and having experience as a certified (ACES) editor, I know that there is nothing that says professional like clean copy. It is always good to have a seasoned pair of eyes make sure that your words present the best image of you, whether it is an academic or professional.

Psychology

Psychology is a a science like no other, It contains anatomy of the brain and the nervous system, and many approaches to why and how we think. The study of these mental processes and the pioneers of these studies are part of the examination of psychology.

Public Speaking

I have worked with high school and college aged students on public speaking. As a veteran of my school's debate team and school theatrical productions, I have helped students improve their the quality of their presentations or performance in plays, including working with students in regional Shakespearean competitions.

SAT Reading

Getting ready for the SAT doesn't have to be difficult. Learning composition, grammar, vocabulary and test skills puts you ahead of the game. Practice makes perfect!

SAT Writing

The best way to get ready for the SAT writing test is have practice essays. By critiquing your writing, I can give you the edge you need. The tools you need are good grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure and critical thinking. Write like a pro!

Spelling

Knowing root words and families always helps make spelling easier, plus knowing the rules of spelling and pronouncing words. I can help dissect the task to make it easy for your student.

Study Skills

My credentials are that I homeschooled both my children and now they are both in honor societies and have scholarships at their respective schools. Furthermore, I have privately tutored many students, both in the homeschool and traditional setting, and I am currently working as a professional tutor in a community college. My primary duties there include working with students that need remedial work to pass college placement tests. Each student is unique, and so I tailor strategies to the type of learning that works best for them.

Vocabulary

The road to a good vocabulary is long, but not hard. Learning the roots of our language gives you big building blocks toward success.

World History

History sometimes is perceived as a bunch of dates, but it is also events that shape our lives. Our current living conditions are a direct result of our history. History is so much more interesting when it is done, with activities and hands-on learning.

Writing

Composition, grammar and organization: three of your greatest assets for making writing easy. If you know the rules, writing is not that painful. If you don't, let me help!
