About Ashley

My focus centers around commitment, passion, and pride. I bring these components to every student I work with, and I ask that my students bring the same. I am unafraid of challenge and have specific strong experience in accomplishing those academic feats with students others have given up on because of two crucial ingredients: I care, and I believe.

I am a certified English Language Arts teacher who teaches at a private school in the Pittsburgh area. My background includes a Literature degree, a Music degree, and a writing minor at the undergraduate level as well as a Graduate Assistantship as a Writing Tutor throughout my Master's coursework in Secondary Education: English.

While I am not officially certified as a counselor, therapist, or special educator, I do have a background working with special populations. My passion lies in urban adolescents, specifically with reading and writing needs. I worked at a youth facility full-time, where I played a large role in teaching a 12 year-old how to read from scratch. I also have experience working with college freshmen struggling through higher level writing and high school or college students writing essays and applications. Furthermore, I have a bit of experience working with English Language Learners and children on the Autism Spectrum. While I am not yet a certified expert in any one of these areas, I am an organized, passionate, driven tutor who is dedicated to each student regardless of their needs and who has had fulfilling and rewarding experiences with my students.

I prefer to meet in libraries or other public spaces, but other arrangements could be made depending on the family.

I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I also like to offer a free introductory meeting to get acquainted with my students and their needs.

I served as a Graduate Assistant in the Writing Center, where I tutored students through their writing needs at various levels. I was a summa cum laude undergraduate Literature student who also belonged to the English Honorary Sigma Tau Delta and completed the Slippery Rock University Honors Program. I have presented my literary work at three different international conventions in three different states the past year, and my creative writing was published in my university's literary magazine. I served as the editor-in-chief of my high school paper for three years and earned many scholarships with my essays.

Reading and writing are skills you need for life, regardless of where you are planning to go. No matter your skill level, I am committed to finding the path that works for you. If you are committed to learning, please contact me. I look forward to reaching new levels of achievement with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Flute

I earned a degree in Music at Slippery Rock University, where I concentrated in flute with Stacey Steele, taking 8 semesters of lessons with her. I performed a half recital and a full recital and performed in Stacey's flute choir for 10 semesters, one of which we traveled to the National Flute Convention to perform. I also hire myself out to churches in the Pittsburgh area.

Literature

I have my bachelor's degree in Literature from Slippery Rock University. I taught advanced literature material in Pittsburgh Public Schools during my student teaching placement and deeply enjoyed the improved reading comprehension of my students. I have also presented literary analysis at numerous conferences across the country including fantasy young adult literature in Pennsylvania, feminist theory in Savannah, African-American literature in Baton Rouge, and Native American Literature in Albuquerque.

Music History

I earned a Bachelor's of Music at Slippery Rock University, where I studied music history under Nanette Kaplan-Solomon as part of my degree. I excelled in her classes, setting curves on exams and enrolling in a specified study of women in music with her for honors credit. I also used the material from her classes in my courses in cultural and literary criticism.

Writing

I worked as a Graduate Assistant in a university Writing Center, where I worked with students of all levels and needs for various courses and purposes.

Very patient and thorough tutor — Ashley is very patient with my son who is not always willing to learn. After only a few lessons, I can already see improvement in his writing. ...
