About Curtis

Dear Parents and Students:

More Tutoring/Less Classroom Teaching - Having tutored for 35 years as part of teaching in private schools, I wish to focus those reading, research, and teaching techniques working with individual students or small groups.

More Understanding/Less Classroom Procedure = Less Headaches

More Individual Focus/Less working with Crowds - Because of this focus, sessions can include more than facts to be memorized. Understanding, application, thinking processes, and relationships are easily included.

More Learning / Less Everything Else - From Socrates to the best teachers today, learning is one of the most important skills for life, not to mention the best way to pass tests!

Sincerely,

Curtis

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

My undergraduate degree in biology and my Master's degree in human nutrition include over sixty hours of anatomy and physiology. My experience teaching and tutoring in this area have involved over thirty years of junior high to college level classwork in both classwork and lab work. I also volunteer counseling in health sessions to school, health facility, and industrial settings with the aim of better living through better knowledge in the related sciences.

Bible Studies

Graduating from a Bible school, teaching in private Bible schools for over 30 years, getting ordained, pastoring, and attending graduate school in Biblical counseling, I feel qualified to work with Bible applications and philosophy.

Specifically, my educational background includes taking a total of 16 undergrad hours and 52 graduate hours in Bible as well as having taught religion courses in junior high through graduate school classes.

Further experience includes performing chaplain functions, starting new churches, consulting in related organizations, designing Bible studies and school curriculum, sponsoring student Bible teachers, working in Bible camps, and independent tutoring.

Biostatistics

I believe that I am qualified to tutor biostatistics based on experience from both sides of the teacher's desk. Six undergrad hours and six graduate hours were taken in support of my biology and nutrition degrees, including doctoral level statistics.

Further study in preparation for academic camps and summer programs has broadened my knowledge in this area.

I have taught both statistics and biostatistics on both the high school and lower college levels as the solo instructor, and team taught graduate level courses in support of the research skills needed. Courses were mainly in the biological science areas, but also included graduate research statistics for theses in other subjects.

The two main styles that I have repeatedly used are the surface use of statistics which involves mostly "Plug and Grind" equations" for those who need it only as a support in a thesis. The seconds group needed the more involved "dissect and understand" mathematical use of statistics. Twice I have used both in the same class.

Botany

After taking eight hours of college botany as a part of my biology degree, I have taught botany as part of general biology courses for twelve years to junior high to college-level students. These classes include both class and lab work on all levels. I have also tutored students and directed after school supplementary help classes to those who wished extra help and to those required to take these sessions.

Genetics

I have taught genetics on the junior high, high school, and college levels for over 10 years. Courses included both the classroom sessions in all ten years and were combined with lab sessions for eight of the ten years. Lab subjects included fruit flies, tse-tse flies, practical illustrations of genetics principles, and population studies of various genetic markers including eye color, hair color, and various genetic diseases. I also have 4 hours of undergraduate credits and an additional 4 hours of graduate credit in genetics.

Nutrition

My college degree is in biology/psychology, and my master's degree is in human nutrition. Additionally, I have 30+ years teaching science on the junior high through college level courses, including tutoring and nutritional counseling. Currently, I teach quarterly seminars in nutrition as part of the medical services offered by my day job. I continue to tutor to this date.

Organic Chemistry

As a student, 24 hours of college chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry were earned for my degrees. In teaching, I have taught both the lab and lecture classes of organic chemistry for over ten years at the high school and college levels. This includes chapters in biology, mathematics, and physical science courses as well as specific chemistry courses. I also have tutoring experience done within those classes and as a resource to students outside of my classes.

Volleyball

My first official volleyball experience came from playing college team volleyball during my undergraduate years. As a player and later as a playing assistant coach our team reached the championship two times in four years. Sadly, we never won first place, settling for second twice.

Including college and after, I have played sand, crab (grass field), club team, indoor, and tournaments for over 35 years.

In addition, I coached volleyball in junior high through high school leagues for 19 years, coached club teams for 5 years, designed and ran volleyball camps for 6 summers, and worked in two additional camps as a counselor/coach. I have also designed and traveled with two high school club teams on extended road trips of over 1000 miles and 2 tournaments per trip.

I couldn't count the unofficial games/matches but it would be over a 1000.

My overall record in organized team play is 311 to 96, including two undefeated seasons 7 first place tournaments, and two state championships.

I also have refereed somewhere around 200 additional game junior high through college level play, and taught classes to refs in league play officiating.

Thank you for considering me for this area,

Curtis (Curt) W.

Zoology

My education in this science includes eight college hours in zoology, including both lab time and class time. Subsequent teaching includes over 20 years of junior high, high school, and college teaching in zoology and related subjects. Adding private tutoring brings experience in dissecting tsetse flies, planaria, worms, grasshoppers, frogs, numerous parasites, sharks, fish, fetal pigs, rabbits, monkeys, cows, and deer, as well as the related classroom studies of the individual organisms, their lifestyles, habitats, and ecology.
