About William

During and after my public school teaching experience I conducted private tutoring in my home for middle school and high school students, using the same curriculum materials: textbooks, workbooks that are used in SFUSD. I also utilized web-based learning modules, those based on the California Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies frameworks. I also tutored students in Social Studies: Ancient Civilizations and World History using effective teacher resources found in subject matter resources for teachers (professional journals and trade books). I have an extensive resource library of my own for reading and writing skill lessons. My emphasis in tutoring is always literacy-building and critical thinking skills, whether it be in reading or composition. A considerable amount of writing workshops are part of my curriculum. I structure homework materials in such a way to make it relevant to the student’s experience, working with literature (literary analysis, reader and writer response) and web-based learning. We use multicultural children’s literature (age appropriate), journal writing, current events, multi-media, newspapers, poetry. I have tutored students ages 9-18 and community college ESL. I enjoy working with young ano older students.

As a full-time school teacher I administered the STAR and PSAT tests in California. This included preparing students with district-approved test-prep curriculum materials. In the case where the packaged test-preparation materials were lacking, I supplemented them with my own handouts which supported specific skill areas. Of course direct/explicit instruction was provided using examples and providing guided practice.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
