Villanova University (B.S.) (Biology, Honors)
My love of teaching stems from my lifelong passion for learning. My mother is a teacher and has instilled in me a love and respect for learning for as long as I can remember. An honors biology and humanities student at Villanova University with additional interests in psychology and ethics, my interests span a wide range. My specialties include calculus, biology (specifically genetics), chemistry, and psychology.
I have had a variety of experiences tutoring throughout high school and college. I have tutored everything from English and Spanish to Chemistry and Biology. I have even spent time tutoring ESL students. I have tutored both through school-based organizations and privately. Most recently in the summer of 2016, I worked as a teaching intern at the Boston Collegiate Charter School where I assisted in teaching biology and chemistry, tutored an array of STEM subjects, and developed personalized summer learning plans for algebra, geometry, calculus, biology, and chemistry students to ensure their success in the upcoming academic year. I am invested in making every student feel successful in any and all subjects because academic success is a critical contributor to personal empowerment. I am invested in that "light bulb moment" where everything comes together in a way that makes the student feel prepared to take on all the academic challenges that come their way.
Though I prefer high school and college, I am willing to tutor anyone of any age who is willing to learn. My fee is $30/hour, and I am more than happy to tutor anywhere within a few miles of Villanova or online. Allow me to use my passion and experience to your advantage; I look forward to working with you. My love of teaching stems from my lifelong passion for learning. If you wish to participate in group sessions, I will increase my rate by $15/hour per additional person
Julia is organized, thorough and engaging for my nervous teenage daughter! She came away from her first lesson motivated to improve in Chemistry! We set up three additional sessions before we even got home!
Julia has really helped Jae and her patience with working with a teenager is impressive.. Jae has been successful since tutoring with Julia. Julia is very confident and pleasant.
Julia has tutored me for a while in genetics. She is extremely knowledgeable and well prepared for tutor sessions! She is able to explain difficult concepts in a simple way. Definitely recommend!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In High school, I was top of my class in Honors Chemistry and AP Chemistry. In College, I AP'ed out of General Chemistry, earned an A- in Organic Chemistry, and have a potential chemistry minor.
I received one of six A's given in my university genetics class (a 75 person lecture). I have also worked, since the beginning of my freshman year, in a genetics lab at Villanova University under Dr. Matthew Youngman where we deal with the Fox-O receptor pathways in C. elegans, a pathway homologous to one in humans which is tied (in both species) to aging, senescence, and cancer development. I also currently tutor genetics privately, and I brought one of my tutees' exam average from a D minus at the beginning of the semester to an A minus by the time of the final.
