About Paul

Teaching is widely regarded as an art, and rightly so. However, I believe that learning is itself an art as well. Upon being presented with large amounts of material in a short amount of time, as in high school, a student cannot simply apprehend the material passively as they might have done in years past. They must therefore develop the skill of knowing how to apprehend knowledge.

In my experience, knowledge is best gained through the active and creative participation of the student. A student learns material most effectively when they are expected to contribute something to the learning process. I have learned the importance of this through my twelve years of private competitive piano study. In my study of piano, it was not the teacher who did the teaching, but rather it was I who did the learning. My teacher did not simply teach me what to think, but instead taught me how to think. And when she gave me notes on a particular passage in a piece, I was expected to immediately reproduce that passage with the requested changes. In personally engaging with the music, and by reproducing the music myself, I was able to acquire a personal, experiential knowledge of the music. And by active participation in the learning process, I was able to learn the music much more quickly.

In a traditional classroom with a lecture-style setting, a student does not have many opportunities to engage with the material being taught. In tutoring, I intend to invert this system and teach through a conversational approach, where the text or subject matter ceases to be simply a conglomeration of facts, but instead becomes a basis for a conversation through which I can teach and the student can learn.

Through engaging with course material, one encounters something beyond the mere facts. As such, all knowledge is interrelated because it all shares in a pursuit of truth. The fruit of knowing grammar, history, government, and languages is not limited to each particular field. Rather, knowledge of these subjects allows us to develop a way of thinking that influences the way in which we live our lives and how we approach social and interpersonal problems we face on a daily basis. Injustice is the result of a lack of knowledge of truth, and through developing critical thinking and reasoning skills, one can develop the faculties be able to attain truth their own reason. I intend to facilitate the knowledge of truth by teaching each individual subject.

In an effort to facilitate truth, I taught piano privately for five years from the beginner to intermediate levels, maintaining up to eight students at a time. After high school graduation, I worked as a teaching assistant at a local community college for Arabic 102. While at Villanova University, I have worked as a tutor for the Center for Multicultural Affairs in Arabic and Spanish for the past two years.

I am native speaker of Arabic, having spoken it at home all my life. In 2014, I worked as a teaching assistant at Howard Community College for Arabic 102, correcting homework, preparing lesson materials, and providing after class tutoring. At Villanova University, I am a Spanish minor and have taken courses in Spanish Conversation, Composition, and Writing and Stylistics. Furthermore, I work as a tutor for the Center for Multicultural Affairs in Spanish and Arabic.

As a Humanities and Political Science double major at Villanova University, the vast majority of my schoolwork entails reading and writing analytical and argumentative papers. To do so requires adequately developed writing technique and advanced organizational and critical thinking skills.

I studied piano privately for 12 years under Faye Bonner, a venerable and well-respected teacher with many national and international winners under her tutelage. Between 5th and 11th grades of high school, I participated in numerous piano competitions, winning numerous state, local, and regional competitions such as the MSMTA Piano Solo Festival, Miriam Shields Gottlieb Memorial Piano Competition, MSMTA Piano Concerto Competition, among many others. I was awarded the Junior Distinguished Music Achievement Award in 2010 and the High School Distinguished Music Achievement Award in 2014 upon graduation from high school. I taught piano privately for five years between 2010 and 2015, maintaining up to eight students at one time. I would love to get a chance to know you! Please feel free to contact me so that we can begin scheduling lessons as soon as you can.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
