About Julia

I taught Latin for 10+ years at the university level, in addition to Greek, Civ, Greek & Latin roots of the English Language, and ancient art history. I love the Classics, especially Latin grammar and literature.

Tutoring is the best because it's all of the fun of teaching, none of the grading (though we can talk about strategies to improve your scores, too). I miss interacting with my students, who were always fun, interesting, and brought new life to the material -- even grammar. (I always loved the reactions to my lay vs. lie lesson -- Latin has the same weirdness as English! I can help you in both languages.) It is always a joy helping the student relate the material to their world, or work through the frustrating parts to a breakthrough.

I have studied and taught Latin for more than 10 years, mostly in the 101-202 range at the college level, using various textbooks (including Wheelock). I have an excellent knowledge of Latin grammar and lots of tricks for learning verb forms. I can also help guide you through complex sentence structures, literary terms, poetical usage, and the literary and historical background of your text. I have a wealth of handouts and worksheets to help!

Having taught for many years, I can help you manage the basics of college -- writing term papers, giving presentations, and research. I have graded hundreds of papers and know what teachers look for and common errors, such as vague thesis statements, insufficient support, and grammatical and stylistic errors. Whether you're at the high school or college level, I can help you develop the tools you need to write a great paper or presentation.

First tip: read the instructions! Students often skip a requirement and receive an automatic deduction.

I look forward to meeting you! Please call or email so we can set up a time to get together. My schedule is flexible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have a BA from CUA and an MA from SUNY Buffalo in Classics, plus additional graduate coursework. I have taught Greek and Roman Civilizations, Classical Mythology, and Roman Art at the university level. I have the most experience teaching 101/102 level classes, and thus have lists of the basic resources students need, concepts teachers look for in exams (e.g. democracy vs. republicanism), and handouts for key dates, figures, etc.

My best tutoring tip for the subject is to learn to spell the names and terms. If the student can generate the funny foreign words, it means they'll remember fully the concepts and key facts related to them in an exam situation. Recognition vocabulary means there's a 50/50 chance they'll blank on an exam, so spelling counts!

Grammar

I have 12 years' experience teaching grammar to college students.

Public Speaking

I have taught for nearly 20 years and thus routinely spoke in front of an audience of c. 50 students. As part of my teacher training I have learned a number of tricks to keep an audience engaged, such as active learning techniques.

I have also spoken to both specialist and general audiences on a variety of subjects, most recently speaking on behalf of the Red Cross. In addition, I can help students with common presentation aids such as PowerPoint or handouts.

I am happy to provide a copy of my resume, a sample handout, etc. Some tricks I would share with students: speak slowly and clearly; drop your voice an octave to help you speak more slowly; modulate your tone; make eye contact with the audience; practice your speech; write out your speech and have a copy in at least 14 point font; each page is c. 2 minutes, but practice it so you don't go over your time.

My tutoring approach would be to have the student practice in front of me. Once the speech is polished (which I can also help with) and we've gone over the various tips, it's all a matter of practice until the student is comfortable.
