About Frances

I have been a substitute teacher for the past 8 1/2 years in the Penncrest School System and have had the benefit of substituting in almost every subject from elementary school up through the 12th grade in the high school. Through this experience, I have been able to assist a variety of students and have actually been a learner, keeping myself current in a diversity of subjects. My background is English, but I have also become skillful in helping students with math up through Pre-Algebra and Algebra I and II. I have 4 children and successfully home schooled them with 3 graduating with high honors in college and one presently in college who graduated at the top of his high school class. Their success is probably the best evidence of the job that I can do and would be able to do for your children. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

For the past 7 years, I have been teaching and tutoring students in Algebra classes when I have been placed in that class as a substitute. I have stayed current on the subject in order to assist students. Furthermore, I helped all of my 4 children with the algebra homework they brought home from the public school.

Bible Studies

I have been a student of the Bible for 30 years, have taught youth classes at church, and have given Bible presentations to adults.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a substitute teacher for 7 years in the Penncrest School System, during which time was spent at both the elementary and high school levels. I taught elementary classes ranging from kindergarten all the way up to the sixth grade. I also fully homeschooled my own 4 children in their elementary years and was the sole teacher in all their subjects.

Elementary Math

I have been substituting in elementary math classes for 7 years. This included all the way up to the sixth grade. This experience has allowed me to teach and be current on many different concepts in the mathematics field. Furthermore, I both taught my own children math and assisted them when they finally attended public school.

Grammar

I have a strong proficiency in English; it was also my minor in college. Through all of the classes I have substituted in during my 7 years at Penncrest, I have been able to practice it both at the elementary and high school level so as to keep fresh and current.

Literature

When I first entered college, my major was English Literature, and I took quite a few classes in that field until I switched to a Business Degree. Literature has been a strong suit for me, and I am often placed in English classes to substitute due to that strength. I am skilled in both reading and analyzing literature to deduce themes, tone, conflict, symbolism and other literary devices.

Phonics

I am the one who taught all of my 4 children to read, which they do quite well. I homeschooled them and actually developed my own phonics program for them at that time. Then, in my duties as a substitute teacher, I followed the school's procedures and taught phonics to children at the elementary level. I have substituted for 7 years, so I have the experience necessary to assist students in this area.

Prealgebra

Because I have been substitute teaching for 7 years, I have been in quite a few Prealgebra classes. As I have assisted students, they have told me I explained the concepts so well that they could easily understand the material. Furthermore, I helped all of my 4 children in their Prealgebra homework. I have always looked over new lessons to stay current and be prepared to teach.

Reading

I have been an avid reader since my youth, reading difficult classics which have sharpened my ability to analyze what I have read. When I read orally, I am extremely skilled, and my listeners enjoy the experience.I have the ability to tie ideas together, sift out the major points, and summarize the general idea.

Spelling

I have always possessed a special ability to spell correctly. At home, my children constantly asked me how to spell words for papers, as I was almost a human dictionary. This skill allowed me to check students' papers quickly for editing purposes.

Vocabulary

Because I loved to read when I was younger, I built up a considerable vocabulary. I also spent time in Literature classes in college as English was my minor. Furthermore, I had English teachers in high school who stressed reading the classics, which greatly enhanced my vocabulary.

Writing

English was my minor in college, so I consequently have a strong proficiency in writing. Throughout the years with my children and students at school, I was constantly editing their sentence structure and evaluating their papers to assist them to write correctly.
