About Justin

I am currently a senior at Penn State University in the Secondary Education Department. During my academic career I have completed many courses and independent studies in regards to history. What is unique about these experiences is that I have been able to learn techniques in reading comprehension of history texts as well as relation of events to prior or current events. In the other fields I have listed (social studies, religion, political science, etc.) I have had at least college level experience in all these categories. In the athletics areas mentioned in my profile I have had playing and participating experience as well as coaching experience. I have worked with many students in the past dating back to high school and have loved working in helping students not only develop their academic skills, but personal skills as well. To be blunt, I believe the ability of any student or individual lies in the belief they have in themselves as well others. My methods for teaching students include promoting personal growth and experience within the lessons.
The main focus of my tutoring and teaching approach is personal development. As aforementioned, I am a firm believer in strengthening a student's personal self is the groundwork in improving academic self. This may seem cliche, but in my experience with many individuals I have worked with and alongside with, personal growth always leads to academic growth. The process I used is not going to show overnight results, but it's intention is to develop the student's skills to be applicable not only in the aforementioned areas, but also in related subjects. It is meant to give students skills that can be applied in all aspects of life and ensure long lasting academic success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am an avid strength trainer in my spare time, and through my sports experiences, as well as relevant course work, I have acquired a moderate amount of knowledge in regards to strength training and fitness. I have helped with strength training groups in football clinics as well as assisted amateurs who are learning the routines and techniques involved in strength training.

I played football from the 7th grade through high school, earning two letters my junior and senior year as a wide receiver and long snapper. I received offers to play for Division III Schools as well as Division II Schools. I have expert knowledge in special teams and offensive techniques for wide receivers along with a wide knowledge on all fundamentals of the game. Throughout my career, I played every position on the filed with the exceptions of Punter, Kicker, and nose-gaurd.

Public Speaking

I have competed in oratory and speech competitions in the past including declamation and Americanism Essay through the American Legion. I have participated in honors level course work during college in speech classes. I also work alongside with many orators in my spare time developing my own speech skills. I was a lector for my church and in the past I taught younger students to practice their oratory skills as well as posture in a public venue.

In terms of public speaking teaching approaches, I have learned to help others work through anxiety and fears of public speaking. This methodology consists mainly of working on not so much the person's oratory skills, but self image and inner fears of practicing public speaking. In using this method, I have seen conclusive results. It includes helping students find weaknesses in basic form and working through those weaknesses to ensure they become strengths. I have also implemented a great deal of patience in mentoring public speakers due to the fact that they respond well to taking their time versus moving speedily through lessons.

My pre-college schooling was in a Private Catholic School from Kindergarten through 12th grade. In that time frame I was enrolled in theology classes ranging from church history and movements to comparative religious studies and catechism. I was a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and Alter Server throughout high school and was in charge of educating new alter servers for a short period of time during high school.

Track & Field

I ran track from 6th grade through 12th grade. In my high school career, I was a three year letter winner in middle distance events (400 and 800). I received 10 offers to run at Division III colleges in these events. I have a broad range of training techniques which include track workouts and strength training. I volunteered to coach at my high school during track season, assisting freshman and new runners with form, strength, and speed.

Although my focus for my teaching career is focused on social studies, I have had significant training in writing and writing methods. Part of being in social studies includes writing many different types of papers to practice writing skills and improve literacy. I have taken multiple courses on composition and writing. These courses also included a significant amount of reading that was aimed at strengthening critical thinking skills to be applied in written word. In regards to my tutoring methods in this subject I am a believer in proofreading and reading out loud. This means I proofread and allow the student to read their original draft aloud so they can hear and see the mistakes they made on their own. I also believe in a patient approach with my students. I understand different students learn at different rates and it is important to adjust to the student's style and improve their strengths while practicing their weaknesses.

Great Tutor! — Justin has been a great tutor for our daughter. With him being an active student himself and student teacher at a local high school, it's been very easy for her to identify with him and gain confidence in being able to juggle her school work and her sports. He's giving her great tools to work with that she can use towards all her subjects. We would highly recommend Justin for anyone's tutoring nee ...
