Hi! I am a young public health professional and experienced tutor. I majored in Biology and minored in African Studies in college. Throughout my education, I have pursued the things I am passionate about and I am eager to share that passion with others. In college, I was elected student academic adviser for my dorm and helped first year students with everything from registering for classes and finding resources on campus, to forming individualized study plans and reviewing material. I also worked as a laboratory teaching assistant for an introductory Biology lab for a semester. At Emory University I was a graduate teaching assistant for a Global Parasitology course responsible for writing, grading and explaining the homework assignments and other course material. Combined with my home-schooling experience in Algebra and Geometry, I am very comfortable creating material for homework and quizzes to assess students' understanding.

In my senior year of college, I tutored two high school students in Algebra I and Chemistry respectively. With both students, I succeeded in increasing their accuracy and confidence in these subjects. After college I also helped home-school a student in Algebra 1 and Geometry. In graduate school I tutored two students, one in AP Biology and Geometry, and one in 4th grade grammar, social studies, math and science.

I am dedicated to each student's advancement and increased confidence in their studies and I aim to make tutoring as fun and engaging as possible. I firmly believe that we learn the most when we enjoy what we are doing, so tutoring sessions shouldn't be laborious. Every student learns differently, and I adapt my approach to the student's needs as well as what motivates them. Sometimes, that involves making a game of elementary math problems or spelling exercises, sometimes fun acronyms or visualizing math and science concepts is the most effective, and sometimes a student may be motivated by proving he or she can do a complex problem.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I took a public speaking class in high school and have since had a lot of experience delivering talks for various purposes. The exercises from my public speaking class gave me tools for how to think about public speaking, tricks for practicing, and ways to motivate or build confidence, all of which can be applied to how I would tutor public speaking skills. I worked for a summer at a science museum giving impromptu talks on the exhibits or 2-5 minute prepared presentation material, where I learned how to read an audience and tailor my speech to their interests. In college, I gave numerous 5-10 minute talks as well as three 20-30 minute talks, all of which I received a high grade for. I know how to edit and shape a speech based on time limits, interests or key points and the audience it is presented to, so that the same material can be presented in a variety of ways. My extensive experience with public speaking and analytical approach to talk structure make me a very qualified tutor in this subject. I also know that most people are very shy about presenting, as I used to be, so I am very gentle and compassionate in my feedback while also ensuring that the student improves.

Writing,

Writing

I have written all sorts of assignments from poetry, to journalism assignments, to literary analysis, book reviews, and scientific writing. I graduated college with a Science major and a humanities minor which means I have written papers for all sorts of situations, following diverse styles. As a young adult applying to graduate school, I have gained a lot of experience in the short compact writing style of cover letters and personal statements. I can easily spot improvements, know how to strengthen writing samples, and have broad experience with different styles of writing. I look forward to helping others improve their writing as well.

Social Studies,

Social Studies

I have tutored one student in Middle school and 9th grade social studies and history-related study skills when I was in high school. I minored in African Studies in college, which drew on many aspects of history, politics, economics and cultural trends in Subsaharan Africa, and also parts of world history. Working with students in college as an academic advisor, I taught students how to use concept maps and examples to illustrate trends in history and across civilizations. Ultimately, I am very familiar with the material that tends to fall under the purview of social Studies.

Genetics,

Genetics

As a biology major in college with research experience in viral genetics and gene manipulation, I am very familiar with the principles of genetics and inheritance. I mostly have experience teaching mendelian genetics in the course of general biology tutoring but I'm also familiar with epigenetics, CRISPR gene editing, gene drives and other topics in this field, as might be covered in more advanced microbiology courses. I've also taken a graduate course in virology and can teach about gene expression in that context. Genetics is a really cool field of study and I can't wait to share my knowledge on this subject with you.
Microbiology,

Microbiology

I majored in Microbiology in college, have 2 years of experience in virology laboratory research and received my Masters of Public Health in Global Infectious Diseases. I have been involved with microbiology 7 years, as of 2020, and tutoring for at least that long. I have also been a teaching assistant for Molecular Biology and Global Parasitology courses. I'm passionate about microbiology and infectious diseases and love sharing my passion and knowledge with others.
