About Kate

Hi! I am a college graduate from Smith College. I majored in Biology and minored in African Studies. Throughout my education, I have pursued the things I am passionate about and I am eager to share that passion with others. In college, I was elected student academic advisor for my dorm and helped first year students with everything from registering for classes and finding resources on campus, to forming individualized study plans and reviewing material. I also worked as a laboratory teaching assistant for an introductory Biology lab for a semester.

In my senior year of college, I tutored two high school students in Algebra I and Chemistry respectively. With both students, I succeeded in increasing their accuracy and confidence in these subjects. I am dedicated to each student's advancement and increased confidence in their studies and I aim to make tutoring as fun and engaging as possible. I firmly believe that we learn the most when we enjoy what we are doing, so tutoring sessions shouldn't be laborious. Every student learns differently, and I adapt my approach to the student's needs as well as what motivates them. Sometimes, that involves making a game of elementary math problems or spelling exercises, sometimes fun acronyms or visualizing math and science concepts is the most effective, and sometimes a student may be motivated by proving he or she can do a complex problem.

I recently took the GRE and am happy to tutor students for standardized tests. Math and Science are the most fun subjects for me to teach, but I have experience with many subjects and would also enjoy working on English, Public Speaking, History, or Writing with students.

I am eager to share my love of learning with you and help make subjects fun and approachable. If you or your child would like to improve in any of the subjects I've mentioned and think I can help, please do not hesitate to reach out. I look forward to meeting you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I took a public speaking class in high school and have since had a lot of experience delivering talks for various purposes. The exercises from my public speaking class gave me tools for how to think about public speaking, tricks for practicing, and ways to motivate or build confidence, all of which can be applied to how I would tutor public speaking skills. I worked for a summer at a science museum giving impromptu talks on the exhibits or 2-5 minute prepared presentation material, where I learned how to read an audience and tailor my speech to their interests. In college, I gave numerous 5-10 minute talks as well as three 20-30 minute talks, all of which I received a high grade for. I know how to edit and shape a speech based on time limits, interests or key points and the audience it is presented to, so that the same material can be presented in a variety of ways. My extensive experience with public speaking and analytical approach to talk structure make me a very qualified tutor in this subject. I also know that most people are very shy about presenting, as I used to be, so I am very gentle and compassionate in my feedback while also ensuring that the student improves.

Social Studies

I have tutored one student in Middle school and 9th grade social studies and history-related study skills when I was in high school. I minored in African Studies in college, which drew on many aspects of history, politics, economics and cultural trends in Subsaharan Africa, and also parts of world history. Working with students in college as an academic advisor, I taught students how to use concept maps and examples to illustrate trends in history and across civilizations. Ultimately, I am very familiar with the material that tends to fall under the purview of social Studies.

Writing

I have written all sorts of assignments from poetry, to journalism assignments, to literary analysis, book reviews, and scientific writing. I graduated college with a Science major and a humanities minor which means I have written papers for all sorts of situations, following diverse styles. As a young adult applying to graduate school, I have gained a lot of experience in the short compact writing style of cover letters and personal statements. I can easily spot improvements, know how to strengthen writing samples, and have broad experience with different styles of writing. I look forward to helping others improve their writing as well.
