My tutoring practice utilizes a peer based approach that challenges traditional hierarchical and authoritarian educational systems. I have always believe that any individual in need of tutoring is in need of an alternative to the default system of instruction. After all, if traditional methods of education worked, you wouldn't be here for tutoring. My alternative system opposes the existing classroom social structure to create a student owned process of discovery through guided trial and error. I do this by focusing on cooperative, collaborative, and critical dialogue rather than simple instruction. In practice this creates a more engaging learning environment and makes the learning process as painless as possible.
I have been using this approach to tutor professionally for 6 years at the college and high school level in math courses such as Calculus, Geometry, Algebra, and Statistics, as well as standardized math tests like the SAT, ACT, and GRE. I also have experience in computer science tutoring with subjects like Python, Java, Data Structures, and Algorithmic Design. I have a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mathematics and Statistics with a Computer Science minor and I have completed all coursework for my PhD in Informatics. Along with my experience in tutoring, I have been a TA for hundreds of students across multiple courses at multiple universities. However, at the end of the day it is not my credentials that make me a great tutor, but the personal skills I use in my approach to tutoring.
I structure my tutoring sessions around Bloom's Taxonomy, but overall each meeting is custom tailored to my students. As this is a collaborative process, I'm happy to incorporate any suggestions or requests you may have. Please feel free to contact me or schedule our first session so that we can get started!
