Juniata College (English Secondary Ed)
I have a degree in Secondary English Education from Juniata College. At Juniata College I was a pre-student teacher for three semesters in which I assisted with teaching and general classroom activities. My senior year of college, I student taught eleventh grade English for fifteen weeks, in which I developed and used original lesson plans, differentiated instruction for students of all levels, and participated in the interdisciplinary team. I enjoy teaching students the mechanics and creativity offered within the English language, and further, enjoy teaching students how to express themselves.
My favorite part about teaching is the facet of learning. I hold to the idea that students teach the educator just as much if not more than the educator teaches the students. I tutored a student from China in pronunciation and grammar of the English language as part of an English Language Learner's program. This student was shy at first, but after the first day he opened up more and was motivated to learn. I believe that I can motivate students to keep trying until they succeed and believe in the power of instilling self-motivation within people. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I completed the course Art of Public Speaking at Juniata College in Fall of 2014. I participated in Juniata College's oldest academic tradition the Bailey Oratorical (a public speaking competition). I also served as 2016 Senior Class President of Juniata College, and in turn gave several public speeches throughout the year, including a final speech at the graduation ceremony.
