About Jasmeet

I am currently a graduate student at UCSD and began tutoring when I was in high school, when I helped younger students learn Latin. Since then, I have both privately tutored for several families and have worked in tutoring agencies (Blue Hut Tutoring and Study Hut, Los Angeles, CA). My favorite subjects to tutor are math, science (chemistry, biology) and Spanish; I also have experience tutoring in elementary K-12, English and History. I am additionally TEFL certified and used to be an English teacher for international adult students at Embassy CES in Los Angeles. I have also held positions as an after-school instructor and a elementary school teaching assistant. I can provide further references upon request.

I greatly enjoy tutoring because it allows me to explore the fundamentals of a subject and carefully explain them to a student. I appreciate the patience and communication skills that I develop through tutoring, and my main goal is to focus on the needs of the student and adapt the curriculum and my teaching style to help them learn best. After my first meeting with a student, I take the time to research and acquire supplementary materials that are relevant to the student's methods of learning and understanding of the subject matter; I take the time to prepare for lesson beforehand, as well as correct assignments or edit essays if need be. The most rewarding moment is when a student understands a concept that once difficult to him/her, and when they are proud of themselves for having understood and accomplished a challenging task or problem.

I have the greatest experience in tutoring math. I also encounter it on a regular basis in my current work, which includes numerical modeling and coding. I enjoy explaining the fundamentals of algebra, geometry and trigonometry to middle and high school students. As these are the basis for higher education, I make it my goal for a student to deeply understand how math works so they can be successful in whatever they go on to do.

My current graduate work is in chemistry. I am experienced in laboratory and measurement techniques. I am skilled in communicating my science to others, especially the fundamentals of inorganic chemistry. I have always enjoyed chemistry and I just love explaining orbitals, electrons, reactions and other topics to students--to help them understand why this subject is so fascinating and applicable to a variety of fields.

I hold a BA in Spanish can speak and write fluently. I have traveled extensively through South America (Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina) and Spain and I understand cultural expression and considerations. In addition, I have also studied Latin and so have a strong grasp of grammar; I am able to explain this carefully and make it accessible to students that may be intimidated by it.

In addition, I also speak other Romantic languages: Portuguese (fluent) , Italian (advanced), and French (intermediate).

I love tutoring and find it incredibly rewarding--Look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am qualified and experienced in tutoring both Algebra 1 and 2. I have taken courses in math that include multi-variable calculus, differential equations, linear algebra and vector calculus. That said, Algebra 1 and 2 are the basis of higher math, and I am very comfortable in instructing fundamental math subjects such as Algebra (1 & 2) and Geometry.

Elementary Math

I have both tutored elementary school children, as well as worked as a Teacher's Assistant in an elementary school. I feel that my patience and respect for fundamentals are important in helping students succeed. I focus on ensuring that the student is not only able to complete the problems, but acquires a deeper understanding of the material, as it will form the basis of many more advanced topics to come.

SAT Math

I have tutored SAT math over the course of several years and am familiar with the strategies and requirements for this test. I have helped many students succeed in recognizing the types of SAT math problems and being able to answer them correctly.

Spanish

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language (2006) from UC Berkeley and have spoken the language for more than 15 years. I have traveled extensively throughout Spain and South America and can communicate fluently in Spanish (both spoken and written). In addition, I have studied Latin and so am adept at understanding and explaining the grammar of the Romance languages (which include Spanish); this is an important skill for helping students succeed in language classes.
