About Carol

This enthusiastic tutor has over 50 years of experience (yes, 50!) as a music teacher--well, I was quite young when I started! The music subjects I offer include: piano, voice, violin, recorder, music history, music theory, beginner- level ballet, and French baroque dance! I am also a harpsichordist and enjoy jazz, Old Time and Blue Grass fiddle, Irish and Klezmer. I play weekly in a Praise Band, and I write a song or two, every now and then. I have a B.A. in Music History from Penn State, an M.M. in Early Music Performance from New England Conservatory, Licentiate Diplomas in Voice, Piano Accompaniment, and Early Dance from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and a Post-graduate Certificate in Hammerklavier from The Royal Conservatory in The Hague. I have been trained by well-known musicians, including Earl Wild and Lamar Crowson, piano, and John Gibbons, harpsichord.

I am a U.S. citizen, who has lived in Europe and South Africa. I am dedicated to helping every student achieve his/her utmost regardless of previous background or level. I have taught music, drama, and ballet (as well as remedial math and English) to an elite population at The International School of Amsterdam, and I have taught music in the Cape Coloured Schools of old apartheid South Africa (where children showed up barefoot, even in the snow)! Everyone made terrific progress!

I am fluent in Dutch and have a lapsed fluency in Afrikaans. I have also studied French, German, and Italian, and I have a degree in secondary English from The University of Amsterdam. I have a year of homeschooling experience in 7th grade English and World History, as well as remedial teaching (elementary math and English). I am especially helpful as an ESL teacher, because I have had to survive, myself, in foreign countries as a second-language speaker. With regard to written English, my background in music history and early music has required a lot of writing. I was also a secretary years ago at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and I have re-written and edited a dozen N.I.H. cancer-research grants, as well as numerous publications, for two professors who spoke second-language English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I am an excellent sight-singer, I write music easily as dictation, and I compose and improvise as well. I have taught this subject for a number of years. I hold degrees in music from Penn State (B.A. music history) and New England Conservatory (M.M. Early Music Performance).

Music History

I hold a B.A. in Music History from Penn State University and an M.M. in Early Music Performance from New England Conservatory. Other related music history qualifications include a licentiate diploma in Early Dance from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and a post-graduate certificate in hammerklavier from The Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Piano

I studied piano with Earl Wild at Penn State and with Lamar Crowson at the University of Cape Town. I was a harpsichord major (student of John Gibbons) at New England Conservatory. I have a licentiate diploma in piano accompaniment from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and a post-graduate certificate in hammerklavier from The Royal Conservatory in The Hague. I have played piano professionally since the age of 13 and taught piano since the age of 10. I am currently employed as a church musician (have been a church pianist/organist most of my life) and as a piano instructor at a community music school.
