I find teaching such a rewarding field and especially love working with students of all abilities and backgrounds. During my 25 year teaching career, I have taught many subjects and age groups ranging from Pre-K to College Level classes. I even had an opportunity to work as a School Administrator. Parents often refer to me as kind and loving to their children and students feel safe in my classroom.
I believe that all children can learn if given kindness, patience and by meeting individual needs and learning styles. I also think it is important to make learning fun. I do this through hands-on projects and with creative teaching methods. For example, in my 3rd grade classroom, the students constructed a real Native American Museum during our study of Native Americans. The Classroom Museum was full of artwork, artifacts and models of different houses in which Native Americans lived. My students also had the opportunity to dress as a United States President or First Lady on our 3rd Grade "Presidents Day." I also believe field trips help to reinforce classroom curriculum and enable learning to come alive.
I can find a special connection with any child and am often told by my students that I am their favorite teacher. I look forward to meeting more students and to continue in education for many years to come. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an experienced teacher of 22 years, I have worked extensively with children with ADD/ADHD. In general, I find these children to be quite intelligent and able to learn as long as the learning environment is suitable. In the classroom they should sit near the front of the instructional area and should be gently guided to maintain attention. I also find that allowing them to stand or move during instruction can be helpful as long as its not distracting to those around them. Tactile activities also improves concentration and attention such as drawing and/or using manipulatives.
I have been employed as an elementary teacher for the past 22 years. My experience includes teaching Pre-School (ages 2-4 years), Kindergarten (Lead Teacher), Third Grade and as Vice Principal of K-8 school. I also worked as a Computer Teacher and taught grades 1-8.
As a former Early Childhood Instructor, Kindergarten Teacher, and current 3rd Grade Teacher, I have worked extensively with phonetic instruction. This is method of teaching reading which assists the student in recognizing letters, sounds of letters, groups of letters, and syllables. The student ultimately learns to put together phonetic sounds to make words and sentences. I have used research based phonetic curriculum guides such as "Open Court" and "Treasures."
