About Michael

I have always enjoyed learning and teaching mathematics, and am particularly effective as a tutor.

I have a B.S. in Meteorology, a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, and have tutored for the Penn State Mathematics Department as well as privately for over ten years. I have worked in several fields where I have had opportunities to apply mathematics, and appreciate it for it's application as well as for the discipline itself. My experience includes 8 years of teaching SAT prep for the State College Area School District, as well as teaching geometry online for a large cyberschool in PA. I have taught 5 semesters of college algebra for Central Arizona College.

I am certified to teach secondary mathematics in both Pennsylvania and Arizona.

I take pride and satisfaction in being able to get students to understand mathematics.

I understand students have gaps in their knowledge that can keep them from progressing, and know first hand that a little help can make the difference.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I was hired by the Math dept. to tutor small groups freshman calculus (140 and 141) back in 2001. Since then I have completed a M.Ed. in C&I (Mathematics Education) and have been teaching at the secondary and college level.

Calculus

I was a calculus tutor for the math department at Penn State right after I got my PA secondary certification. I taught small groups of freshman calculus students a couple hours per week. My Masters degree work included a lot of Analysis (what calculus is largely based on).

Differential Equations

My undergraduate degree shows taking and passing Differential Equations, as well as application in modeling weather. Substantial coursework in analysis and applied calculus during certification and pursuit of M.ED degree (Penn State 07) indicate familiarity with subject that allow me to help students working on differential equations. I was once employed by the PSU math department as a grader of math 251 (Differential Equations as commonly taken by science and math majors).

Praxis

I received ETS recognition of excellence in the Mathematics Subject area test. Over 40 credits beyond Calculus as well as Pennsylvania certification suggest I can tutor Praxis mathematics effectively.

SAT Math

I was an SAT prep mathematics instructor for SCASD Department of Community Education, and I wrote my M.Ed. paper on statistical analysis of SAT test mathematics question responses.
