About Eden

I am a recent college graduate certified to teach ESL (English as a Second Language) through the International Teacher Training Organization (ITTO). I am enthusiastic about the learning process and I enjoy helping others realize their full potential. It is my goal to work with students to make connections between their everyday lives and the language skills they want to build. By making the learning process relevant to each student's individual needs, I find it possible to find fun and engaging ways to help students benefit from the learning process.

In addition to my previous experience tutoring ESL at a Library in Amherst, MA, I worked as a Residence Life Staff Member and volunteered for a youth support group while in college. In each of these positions, I worked to create an atmosphere of positive energy and to meet each person where they are at in the learning process. Rather than focusing the learning process on repetitive tasks like memorizing words, I worked to incorporate exercises that made learning fun. My first priority is to identify your needs as a student, and to find a way that we can work together towards achieving your goals.

Please don't hesitate to contact me to learn more about how I can help. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with you about your learning interests and needs!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

As a college student, I tutored English as a Second Language (ESL) for the local public library in Amherst, MA. I have taken coursework in teaching ESL through the International Teacher Training Organization, and I intend to apply to the New York Teaching Fellowship to teach ESL in New York City public schools next school year.

Proofreading

As a college student, the courses in my major of study were largely evaluated based on written essays between 8-30 pages in length. I consistently achieved grades of A- or higher on these assignments as a result of both the quality and content of my writing. I was frequently informally employed by friends and classmates to proofread their written assignments as well! I find that I am easily able to identify errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, and other aspects of sentence structure, while also checking for clarity of ideas and expression in written content.

Spanish

As a college student, I took six classes in Spanish (four of which were immersion-based) and received grades of A- or higher in each one. I also studied abroad in Spain for a semester. My practical experiences using Spanish language skills include a three-month internship as a citizenship facilitator in New York City where I assisted a majority of monolingual Spanish-speaking clients in the citizenship applications process.

Writing

As a college student, each of the 16 courses required for my major of study were evaluated through a series of written essay assignments that ranged from 8 - 30 pages. In each of these assignments, I achieved an A- or higher. I am highly skilled at identifying the topic, structure, and flow of ideas in written work and helping students to learn to recognize the elements and structure of a well-written assignment.
