Bio

I have a passion for showing students that they can learn anything! My years in the classroom have taught me that every child learns differently, and as a teacher my biggest and first task is to figure out how that is. As a teacher I must start where the child is: What do they already know? What foundational blocks might be missing that is holding them back from learning a new concept or material?

I love tutoring because I get to work with students one on one. I get to give one student all of my attention. That allows me to focus precisely on what the student needs, and just as important, how they need me to deliver that instruction. For 18 years I have been able to help students. My greatest reward has been watching a student light up when they realize that they can do something that they thought was impossible. Watching them learn a new concept is rewarding, but most rewarding is watching their self-confidence rise!

I am an experienced teacher who has used state standards and Common Core standards to guide 18 years of classroom instruction. Teaching math I have learned that it is essential to understand the building blocks of math concepts, and to always remember that it is critical to understand if a student has previous knowledge that needs to be further developed before they can learn new content. I think of it as walking up steps. When a student has not mastered all of the necessary prior knowledge, expecting them to master the new concept is like asking them to go from step one to step five without touching steps 2, 3 and 4. It's impossible. When teaching math it is critical for me to consider what content is being built on, what knowledge does the student need to have understanding and mastery of in order to learn and understand the new content introduced.
Teach, don't preach.... that's my philosophy for teaching math!

I believe that children are born natural scientists. They are curious about the world around them. Unfortunately too often students are discouraged when that na

I spent 6 years working in a public school that adopted the Common Core at its inception. Math was the biggest change for teaching during that time. We went from a culture of teaching that gave students directions on how to find an answer to a new culture of allowing students to explore how to get an answer, and through that exploration students are guided to build more understanding of the process. There was no longer one right way to solve a problem. Students were able to develop their own strategies for solving problems. I have to say that as the teacher I did see great growth in students' understanding of math concepts with this change.
