English/Language Arts:
My degree is in English Education, and I have 1 year of experience teaching in the secondary English classroom as well as 8 years of experience as a teacher for county/district homebound students and as a substitute teacher. I can provide effective tutoring in any area of English/Language Arts.

Testing/Essay Writing:
I have scored the SAT essay every year since March of 2005. I maintained a high validity rating, achieved incentives and was often asked to give a third opinion on essays that were difficult to score. I would like to switch my focus from Essay Evaluation to Essay Preparation. I have scored essays for other tests, and tutoring sessions will help you to score well on your essay because you will know exactly what is expected of you.

I have 9 credits from Grand Canyon University's Master of Special Education program.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have 4 years of experience working as an Employability Teacher and Career Counselor. I have done this through my work at Northern High School, SCI Somerset and CareerLink. It is my belief that junior high and high school students do not receive nearly enough instruction or guidance in Career Exploration or Career Development or the job search in general, and I am passionate about helping people of all ages successfully walk down the career path that is best for them. Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as a teacher of home-bound students for 4 years through Calvert County Public Schools and Somerset Area School District, and in this position, I worked with elementary students in grades K-6 in all subjects. I also assisted in teaching elementary students when working as a TSS (Therapeutic Support Staff). I have also worked as a substitute teacher in elementary schools.

Study Skills

My most recent applicable experience to teaching study skills is that I was recently asked to teach a study skills class, Habits for Success, as an adjunct teacher this semester at our local community college. This class is 1-1/2 hours per week, so it will still allow time for me to tutor.

My background is in English Education, and I spent 1 year as a secondary English teacher in Maryland. As a classroom teacher, you often have to share study skills with students, especially if they are struggling with a certain concept and need help in knowing how to use their homework assignments to improve in this area or gain understanding.

After the year I spent as an English teacher, I work as a teacher of homebound students, and when I taught lessons in students' homes, I also helped them with their studying. This required teaching them study skills.

My other related experience includes working 2 years as a part-time Adult Basic Education teacher, working since March of 2005 as a SAT essay scorer on an as-needed basis, and working as a Career Planner at the local CareerLink.
