I have been a professional trumpeter since 1983, having performed in 23 states and Canada with dozens of appearances on national television including a featured appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman during the monologue.
I am now accepting students for private lessons. As a former student of the late, great cornet soloist and educator James F. Burke and also jazz legend James K. "Jimmy" Maxwell, I am proud to be a part of a long line of the greatest trumpeters and educators in history which include Herbert L. Clarke, Del Staigers and Ernest S. Williams.
Lessons are tailored to fit a student's individual needs. I offer reasonable rates, flexible schedules, comfortable setting and guaranteed results.
My location is close to public transit (SEPTA regional rail and bus).
I am also available to teach online via YouTube or SKYPE. Call me or email me to discuss setting up a plan that works for you. Thanks! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My experience is slanted more towards arranging, especially for that of brass ensemble, or a rock ensemble.
I have been teaching trumpet for five years and have been playing professionally for 30 years. I studied ear training in high school. My approach is unconventional. I listen to the student and make suggestions as we go.
I can tutor several brass instruments including french horn, baritone, euphonium and tuba. My background in cornet and trumpet lends itself to other brass instruments as the fingerings are usually the same (except french horn) and the aperture and embouchure application is similar to that of trumpet. Additionally, the applied music theory is virtually the same as the trumpet.
I have been studying music in all its forms since I was about 10 years old, beginning by transcribing the lyrics to "I Think I Love You" by THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY. My first LP recording purchase was "Let It Be" by THE BEATLES and I have been a BEATLES HISTORIAN ever since. I have made 2 trips to Liverpool, once with a guided tour by noted Beatles historian and author David Bedford. As a professional trumpet player, I have been required to play many classical pieces by MOZART, HAYDEN, BEETHOVEN etc. As a student of the late, great cornet soloist JAMES F. BURKE, I have a deep knowledge and appreciation for the HISTORY OF THE CORNET SOLOIST. My research has lead to creating detailed, informative and popular websites for Mr. Burke as well as one of his teachers, the great DEL STAIGERS. I have a great love for the music of FRANK ZAPPA and have transcribed many of his works and own most of his recordings. I have a record collection of over 500 LPs and another 200 in CDs and tapes which consist of some of the finest jazz, jazz fusion, rock, prog rock, blues, bluegrass, folk, concert band, classical and avante garde artists in history.
Because one cannot properly grasp music history without listening to the music, much of the lesson will be devoted to just that - listening to many fine recordings and then discussing them.
I am a former student of world renowned cornet soloist and educator James F. Burke with whom I studied for over 2 years. I have also studied with jazz legend Jimmy Maxwell and Pittsburgh Symphony principle trumpeter Murray Karpilovsky. My time with these great men propelled me into a career as a professional trumpeter, where I am widely regarded as the preeminent race track bugler in North America. My professional career began in 1987 and since that time I have performed in 24 states and Canada and made dozens of appearances on national television, most notably in 2003 on "The Late Show with David Letterman", performing right along side David during his monologue.
I have been teaching privately since 2009 and am looking for a few more students. Each one of my students has has great success. I stress fundamentals and musicianship, while accepting the fact that each student is different with individual needs and rates of development. My lessons, conducted in my home are comfortable, relaxed, flexible and most importantly, productive. My experience as an instructor also includes successfully dealing with the trauma of a student getting braces on or off their teeth.
Bright beginners are taught the fundamentals including the memorization of all scales and arpeggios; high school students are guided through auditions and solo competitions and college students are prepared for entrance into the professional field with an emphasis on avoiding many of the unnecessary pitfalls musicians often encounter.
