About Erin

I recently returned home from a year in Russia on a Fulbright Scholarship. I have a degree Russian language and European history. I have always been drawn to tutoring and I enjoy teaching. When I'm not teaching Russian or ESL, you can find me reading, hiking, or attempting to cook.

I have a rich background in teaching and tutoring that will be helpful in my role as an tutor. I have tutoring experience on both the elementary and university level. As an America Reads tutor, I taught reading to a first and a third grader twice a week. One of my students was very intelligent but he did not like reading, especially fiction. I modified my lesson plan to include science experiments so he would read the directions in order to complete the steps. I also used worksheets that used elements from the periodic table to spell words in order to spark interest in writing and spelling. In addition, I have also tutored a Somali refugee family at their home. As a founding member of Panthers for Homeless Children, I provided assistance with math and reading homework for 4th -6th graders once a week. On the university level, I was an undergraduate teaching assistant for the comparative culture course offered by the Slavic Department. In addition to meeting with students and managing the clerical aspect of education, I presented several lectures.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
