About Angela

I have been an elementary school teacher for eighteen years. I have taught all grade levels, K-8. I enjoy teaching through various methods, especially through games and hands-on activities. I enjoy working with students one-on-one, or in small groups. My specialty is tailoring lessons to a student's individual needs and interests.

I have a bachelor's degree and a teaching credential in Elementary Education, as well as a master's degree in Early Childhood Education. I am currently a full time caregiver and attend teaching conferences in order to stay current with new ideas and methods.

I know how frustrating it can be for parents and students when a child has difficulty understanding a particular subject or concept, or just needs to be shown a skill in a creative way. I truly believe that school should be an enjoyable experience for all children, and I'd like to help make that happen for your child.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an elementary school teacher. I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education as well as a Massachusetts teaching credential for grades 1-6. I also have a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education and a Pennsylvania teaching certificate for private schools. I have been teaching elementary school for thirteen years. I have experience in teaching all grades, K-8.
I currently teach in a one-room school house, grades K-6. I teach all subject areas including math, reading, writing, grammar, social studies, and science.
We study American history from the discovery of North America through the 1960s, as well as ancient history focusing on Egypt, Israel, the Mayan civilization, Greece, Rome, India, and Asia. We also study countries/capitals and state facts and capitals. We work on a different science theme each year, rotating between physical, biological and earth sciences. We work daily on elementary and pre-algebra math skills, as well as on phonics, grammar, spelling, and comprehension skills.
I use a variety of teaching methods in my classroom in order to reach the great variety of learning styles and developmental levels of my students. I use engaging literature, manipulatives, games, projects, internet research, and cooperative learning experiences to make learning exciting and interesting for my students.

Phonics

I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education as well as a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education. Much of my coursework was centered around the teaching of reading. I was trained in the method of Whole Language and have attended many educational workshops on various reading strategies and programs.
I teach phonics each day to grades K - 2. We work on letter recognition, letter sounds, blends, long and short vowel sounds, and the blending of letters into words. Each day we review letters previously learned, and we work on a particular rhyming word family. We also practice making sentences with words as we learn them, in order to promote a holistic view of how letters and words are used in written and verbal communication.

Reading

I am a credentialed elementary school teacher. I have taught reading at grade levels 1- 8. I have been responsible for teaching reading to kindergarten and first grade students for many years. I prefer to use teaching methods that are hands-on, enjoyable, and interactive for the students, and I believe that individual instruction makes a very positive impact on the learning process.

Knowledgeable and very patient. — Angela was very patient with my son. He was a little nervous going to the first meeting but at the end of the session he was smiling. She has provided great feedback and offered suggestions to help him become a better reader. I am very excited for our next session. Thank you. ...
