About Iesha

As a certified high school English teacher who is currently pursuing a Master's in English, I have picked up many do's and don'ts when it come to teaching, but more importantly, when it comes to tutoring a student who just simply needs someone to bring out the knowledge that is already in his or her mind. During my undergraduate career, I served as a peer mentor to incoming freshman at West Chester University. As a peer mentor, I had the opportunity to tutor some of the students in their general education classes. Though some of the classes that they were taking were not classes that I ever received credit for personally, I used strategies such as guiding and scaffolding to show students that they have the information in their minds already, and that I am simply a guide to help them pull the information out.

At this time in my career, I am working as a high school substitute teacher. While working in the various school districts, I have had opportunities to work with middle school and high school students in the classroom. I have conducted my own lessons. I have also taken and completed a class in tutoring writing, and through that seminar I have gained strong abilities in aiding students in writing and reading strategies at the middle school, high school, and college levels.

I have tutored students over Skype, face-to-face, and through systems such as Google docs. My schedule is very flexible, and I am open to try new arrangements and even work with parents along with their children so that they can aide in helping their learning when I am not scheduled to work with them at that time.

I am the tutor that will believe in you and work with you through your frustrations no matter how long it takes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a certified High School English teacher in PA. I have been substitute teaching for the past two years while pursuing my MA in English Creative Writing. Outside of substitute teaching, I also tutor college students on my college campus and aid them in the process of writing and in understanding literature and literary theory.

Literature

At this time, I am currently in the process of completing my student teaching experience at a high school. I am teaching American Literature and have been assisting students through self-designed lessons and through one-on-ones with students who need the extra help. In this class, I focus on teaching writing skills (grammatical & writing process), critical thinking skills as applied to literature and vocabulary, and public speaking skills in connection to class discussions and presentations.

Praxis

I am a currently certified Secondary English teacher in PA and have taken the first Praxis exam, which is considered the Basic Skills requirement, along with the Praxis II in English Literature. I passed both of my exams on the first try by formulating study skills of my own and using resources found on the internet and in study help books. I believe that through the study skills and knowledge that I have built, I would be a good resource in helping to prepare for the exam.

Proofreading

I am a certified High School English teacher in PA. I have been substitute teaching for the past two years while pursuing my MA in English Creative Writing. Outside of substitute teaching, I also tutor college students on my college campus and aid them in the process of writing and in understanding literature and literary theory. I am very meticulous when it comes to a lot of formal writing. I go through each line word by word out loud and tutor students to do the same so the he or she will begin to catch their own mistakes.

Public Speaking

I completed a required Public Speaking class at West Chester University of PA with an final grade of 'A'. After the class, I have taught public speaking to high school age student while also tutoring freshman at the university in the public speaking class for the past two years.

Reading

As a certified high school English teacher, I assist student with literacy skills so that the student can decipher a text. Along with teaching the necessary literacy skills, I aim to aid students with utilizing their literary skills to improve their writing.

Spelling

I am a certified High School English teacher in PA. I have been substitute teaching for the past two years while pursuing my MA in English Creative Writing. Many students who struggle with spelling, struggle because of a small lack of understanding the meaning of the word. When tutoring spelling, I like to also work with tutoring vocabulary because I believe that an individual who understands the meaning will also improve his or her spelling. My aim, when working with students on their spelling, is to improve their skills to the point that they will also become better readers and writers.

Vocabulary

I am a certified High School English teacher in PA. I have been substitute teaching for the past two years while pursuing my MA in English Creative Writing. Outside of substitute teaching, I also tutor college students on my campus and aid them in the process of writing and in understanding literature and literary theory. When working with students who struggle with their vocabulary, I try not to focus on having the student understand the word versus simply memorizing it. I believe that when a student understands what makes up each part of the word, it will help to improve their understanding of other vocabulary words.

Writing

I am a certified High School English teacher in PA. I have been substitute teaching for the past two years while pursuing my MA in English Creative Writing. Outside of substitute teaching, I also tutor college students on my college campus and aid them in the process of writing and in understanding literature and literary theory. When tutoring writing, I believe that a student should learn the process of writing and focus on content and organization. I like to tutor these skills so that students will eventually learn the necessary skills to support their own writing.
