Hi, everybody! My name is Jake and I am a PhD student in Chemistry, a father of a one year old, and happily engaged to the love of my life. In my free time, I enjoy teaching students about anything and everything from science and math to presentation and writing skills. I am currently a PhD student at Penn State University where I have TA'd for General Chemistry I and I Lab, and am currently doing research in physical chemistry. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown summa cum laude as a biochemistry-biology double major. There I tutored General Chemistry, General Biology, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics, Physics, and Calculus I and II. I also was a supplemental instructor (think TA but without grading) for General Biology for 3 years. I think tutoring is a lot of fun, even though it is a lot of work. I absolutely live for the ah-ha! moments where students finally figure out something that has been troubling them after a lot of work and practice.

I classify myself an extroverted introvert (sounds weird I know) in that I am quiet and keep to myself but will also get really excited when talking about certain things with people that I end up the biggest extrovert in the room. It translates very well to tutoring in that I am patient and will listen and observe as you try to do or talk me through how you would solve a problem, but I can interject at levels ranging from correcting small issues or misconceptions to going major science nerd and telling you why the sky is blue or it takes longer to boil an egg on a mountain than at sea level! I am very adaptable to different tutoring styles that will benefit you the most! I personally am a very visual learner and thus that is probably my strongest style to teach (drawing pictures, solving problems, using models), but I have had experience with students who benefited from abstract examples to make sense of certain concepts (think vapor pressure and egg boiling) as well as teaching material as if it was new to people who were more confused from

My B.S was a double major in biochemistry and biology focusing on molecular biology and I have completed extensive coursework in genetics and related subjects. I received A's in undergraduate Genetics and Advanced Genetics and in a graduate level genetics course. I have also tutored undergraduate genetics courses to several students over the past 3 years.
