A variety of experiences have helped me understand the language & cultural aspects of the Deaf. I currently use sign language with family & friends as it is the language of choice for me. I have about 20 years of experience with sign language. I am deaf, but can speak. I am happy to teach about sign language/ASL & Deaf culture.
My experiences entail teaching at summer camps for the deaf, a sign language club, substituting for classrooms for the deaf, visiting individual students as an itinerant Teacher of the Deaf, program manager for a Deaf group home, case manager for a non-profit agency for the deaf, among many other experiences.
My unique background understanding of deafness & experiences with others who are Deaf provide me with a better insight to the language of the Deaf. I can better explain the reasoning behind signs, while bringing Deaf cultural aspects to light.
Please contact me if you are interested in learning sign language/ASL. It would help to know your reason for wanting to learn sign language. I will meet you at whatever level of signing you are & aim to bring you to where you would like to be. I'm dedicated to doing the best that I can & giving you the support you need. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm a Teacher for the Deaf. I'm deaf myself & had to learn & use sign language. I'm familiar with the language as I use it daily & in my interactions with others who are deaf.
I've worked with people of various ages & of various sign skills. I've been an example to others when they need to learn or use a sign. I've tutored a student for about 2 years on how to develop his English & sign language skills. I have been a language model for other students in different contexts (classroom, itinerant teaching, club).
