Hello! My name is Susan. I am a full-time elementary special education teacher in the Morristown Area School District. I have worked with grade levels from kindergarten to 8th grade. I believe that all students are capable of learning and making progress. I believe it's my job to help them find the motivation they need to not give up until their moment to shine comes.
My very smart son was diagnosed with a learning disability. He struggled through first and second grade. I was patient and encouraged him to keep trying no matter what even though it was difficult. Homework was very stressful and heart-breaking at times. Third grade came and something just clicked for him. He is still reading slightly below his grade level but he became a shining star during his third grade year. I am so proud of him. He has a great attitude about learning now and works hard to the best that he can. He even received a special award from the principal for his hard work and being a good role model for others. All children will go through struggles with school but its so important to not ever let them give up.
Teaching reading is my favorite subject to teach. I have taught students from kindergarten to 8th grade. It is so exciting to watch nonreaders start reading more fluently. I have seen this success across all of the grade levels that I have taught. Each child is unique and may need a different approach. I can assist your child in finding the approach that works best for him or her.
With my varied experience in many different elementary and middle school grade levels, I have a deep understanding of what is expected at each level. This knowledge will help guide me in meeting your child where they are at and know where we need to go to be successful in the next grade level.
Math is more than just adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. I will help your child learn these skills as well as apply these skills when problem solving using hands-on manipulative and materials. I will try to motivate them by having them complete problems using topics that spark their interest.
I have read about and studied dyslexia. This is an especially important topic for me because it runs in my family. I have some techniques that can help your child to train their brain to overcome some of the struggles that come with dyslexia. I can also look closely and figure out what your child's gift is when it comes to dyslexia. For example, my son has a very unique way of solving math problems because he is able to visualize numbers and pictures in a creative way in his head.
Please contact me if you think I would be a good match for you and your child.
