About Kelly

My name is Kelly, and I am a teacher of the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing. I hold a Bachelors degree in Deaf Education from IUP as well as a Masters degree in Learning Design &Technology from Purdue University. My Pennsylvania certifications include Pre-K through 12th grade Deaf Education and K through 6th grade Elementary Education. I have worked with both students that sign and students that are oral.

Being an itinerant teacher, I am able to individualize education. I work with my students one-on-one, and I tutor in the same way. The key is to find the individual student's learning style, and if one method doesn't work, we try another one. I do my best to relate my lessons to the student's interests and draw from their previous knowledge/experiences.

The majority of my work with students focuses on reading and language. The teaching methods in these areas used in Deaf Education are very beneficial for all students. During my undergraduate work, I also took courses on teaching middle level math.

The majority of my graduate work focused on designing instruction, so I am able to take the information to be learned, and put together lessons that are best suited for your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

While my degree is in Deaf Education, I currently hold a Pennsylvania Elementary (K-6) Education teaching certificate. I performed my Elementary Education Student teaching at a district in Pittsburgh, and I worked as a substitute teacher in many elementary classrooms in the Pittsburgh area. It was a nice change of pace, and several teachers requested me to work in their classrooms. My approach to Elementary Education is very similar to Deaf Education. The methods used in special education are very beneficial to general education student, especially if they are struggling.

When tutoring an elementary student, I will look at the content and find exactly what the student is struggling with. I will use various methods based on the student's individual learning style to help him/her understand what is being taught.

Hard Of Hearing

I currently hold a Pennsylvania PK-12 Deaf Education teaching certificate. My Bachelors Degree is in Deaf Education, and I work full-time as an itinerant Teacher of the Hearing Impaired. I work one-on-one with my students on a regular basis.

Phonics

As a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired, phonics is a huge part of my job. I am also certified to use visual phonics. This is used with students that are not able to hear the sounds, or they aren't able to discriminate between sounds. Part of my job is teaching children that can't hear sounds, or can't discriminate between sounds to read.

Sign Language

I currently hold a Pennsylvania PK-12 Deaf Education teaching certificate. My Bachelors Degree is in Deaf Education, and I work full-time as an itinerant Teacher of the Hearing Impaired. I use ASL on a regular basis. I am also part of a Deaf family, so I use ASL to communicate with them.
In college, I took ASL courses and tutored ASL 1 students.
