McDaniel College (MEd)
Dear Students, Parents, and Families,
Since 2005, I have worked as a substitute teacher in the Carroll County Public Schools. I am certified in Secondary English, with a Masters degree in Education from McDaniel College which I received in 2008. Due to the economy and school financing along with shrinking enrollment, I have worked in many long term jobs, meaning for full semesters in most cases. The schools where I have held these positions include North Carroll HS, South Carroll HS, and Gateway School. I have also taught at Westminster HS, Century HS, Winters Mill HS, Francis Scott Key HS, Manchester Valley HS, and various middle schools in the county. I am familiar with all language arts components. These classes include Modern American, Global Perspectives, Pop Culture, Multicultural, Public Speaking, and Grammar. In addition, I have taught Reading, successfully prepared students for HSA's, and tutored after school. I have supported students to complete Bridge projects in summer school and in after-school programs. Life skills and special needs students are among my favorites.
I am willing to work just as hard as you show me you can! Even if you hate reading, I don't mind! I take my time, and will work with you at your own pace. I'm nice and patient, but I expect a lot of effort from you. I really want you to be successful!
What parents want to know: I am results oriented. Your child's success is my success. I have experience with standardized test prep as well as classroom instruction at all levels, from the strugglers to the high flyers. My references include principals from all over Carroll County and many colleagues as well. Please know that I am reliable and flexible, and that my students really like me! Great for SAT English review. Targets the student's weakness, develops a plan, teaches and builds the confidence to succeed.
Maryanne connected well with my daughter. Building a positive relationship is what motivates my daughter to work her best. I would recommend her for SAT preparation for language arts and writing.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Over the years I have substituted in elementary k-6 for many years. I am highly skilled in teaching reading and other elementary subjects. Importantly, I have a deep love for the young ones, and have worked with elementary students with cognitive deficits. Nobody loves a snack more than I do!
Vocabulary and comprehension, along with standardized test preparation and remediation is the experience that I can bring to your child. I connect with students "where they are," and build skills from there.
I have extensive experience working with special needs students, many of them well above-average academically. They are treasures to me because they work so hard to overcome their issues. My experience includes working 1:1 in Carroll County Public Schools with children with genetic disorders, ESY coaching in schools, assistance with state mandated testing and projects, all with a view to enhancing accommodations and independence for student learning. I have taken graduate coursework in Special Education with "A" grades.
Study skills is an area of tutoring in which I excel. I come with a diverse background in reading for comprehension, outlining, and creative methods for deepening concentration. I am very interested and experienced working with students with ADHD and I am adept at sorting information and organizing material in a way that breaks it down for students. I am familiar with different tactics that lead to retention of information and testing methods. I think I am most effective in a 1:1 setting with students. I have a great deal of patience and try to make studying as much "fun" as possible.
