About Diana

As a writer, editor, photographer and public relations specialist, I have dedicated my career to improving writing skills, helping writers edit, proofread and fact-check their work, and teaching photographic composition. I teach students how to write "for" their readers by telling a story as well as rewriting and polishing their first drafts. My strengths are writing feature stories, press releases and blogs, editing publications and web pages, and producing communications that will engage my audiences, as well as building strong working relationships with those I serve. I enjoy being a resource to my co-workers and to the many interns I have supervised--providing mentor support, advising, and encouraging them in their creative work. We learn from each other by embracing the process of collaboration.

I have served a women’s health facility, three medical centers, a library system, university press, hospice, dietary supplements company, and am currently supporting community relations for a central Pennsylvania township. I founded and published a monthly arts newsletter, generating 150 paid subscribers and building “a community for the arts.” I taught art classes, showed my photography, organized workshops, produced and performed in concerts. As a project person, I am creating something new every day, from photo essays and projects to Pinterest boards in celebration of popular culture. I maintain a portfolio of my writing and photography and also feature my photography online. I love connecting with people by telling stories through my photographs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

I am a pop culture scholar with more than 30 years’ experience writing about film and television, from movie reviews and previews to profiles of actors and directors. As arts editor of Penn State’s Daily Collegian during my undergraduate years, I devoted special attention to movies and also covered the University’s independent French Cinema series. I studied French cinema with Robbie Ariew and American cinema with Neal Gabler, who went on to co-host Sneak Previews and became a renowned author of scholarly works on film. As a graduate student, I took courses in American history and film, as well as guest lectured on the Hollywood Blacklist of the 1950s. Later, I founded and published a monthly arts newsletter that introduced my readers to new perspectives on movies, from the true story behind “The Sound of Music,” to appreciating films for what they try to be. My special interests have been films of the 1970s, how women are portrayed, biopics, documentaries, and films that explore race. I’m a longtime follower of classic films and iconic actors from the studio era. In addition, I have been a student of work by directors that include Billy Wilder, George Cukor, Sydney Pollack, Sidney Lumet, Alan Pakula, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Ritt, and Clint Eastwood.

Photography

I have been a working portrait and event photographer for more than 30 years. Since attending the Phil Douglis Visual Workshops in 1984, I have specialized in natural light photography, even in very low light—avoiding the harsh, unflattering skin tones and shadows that flash photography can create. I learned natural, candid alternatives
to conventional shots and how to play with available light. Experience—and appreciation for the natural beauty of my subjects—has helped me get comfortable with them
before shooting. I get close without being intrusive and blend into any situation by patiently waiting for the right moments to shoot. I have taught workshops in composing better photographs and worked with students of all ages.

Proofreading

As a writer and editor, I produce publications, draft press releases for national distribution, and manage website content. I also edit other writers' copy for accuracy. It is essential that I thoroughly review my work for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style. I'm also responsible for fact checking and ensuring thematic consistency. I have more than 30 years' experience proofreading my own work and the work of others, and I am always editing and proofreading. Not only is it one of my primary strengths, but I also love it.
