About Marisa

I'm looking to pick up some extra work to supplement my part-time work as an ESL instructor with BTI. Not only do I teach ESL but I have taught Spanish at Kutztown University, Alvernia University, and Albright College. I've also taught Italian at a few schools in western NY.

I spent my junior year of college in Spain and liked it so much I went back and finished my MA there in 1 year.

When I returned to the states after my MA, I worked as a hospital translator. I worked in the ER, the billing office, the labor and delivery room (especially with midwives, and I was even present to help deliver about a dozen babies), the OR, as well as worked on translating hospital documents and teaching lunch-time sessions of Spanish for hospital personnel.

I have been teaching university-level classes for almost 20 years. I have taught all levels of Spanish (from elementary to specialized classes for Spanish majors) and have advised students who were Spanish majors/minors in their studies as well as their opportunities for study abroad. I was also the coordinator of Italian language at two of my previous places of employment.

Throughout my years of teaching I have tutored many students, from elementary-schoolers to adults, in Spanish and Italian.

I am also able to tutor in Russian, ESL, and general grammar.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked for many years migrant workers and have trained college students to teach ESL. While I am not "certified" I am a university level language teacher (Spanish and Italian) and have had many opportunities over the last 10 years in western NY to work with migrant workers on their English skills.

Russian

I was a Russian minor in College (Dickinson College class of 1993). I studies in Russia the summer of 1991 (the summer that communism fell). I continued to study Russian in graduate school on the side and have friends in Russia that I am planning on visiting soon. I hope to teach it one day at university level, that is, basic language classes and I think tutoring in it would be a great way to get that ball rolling.

Overall wonderful experience! — I highly recommend Marisa as a Spanish tutor. She came to my house twice a week this summer and prepared my son for a high school Spanish 2 class. Marisa has excellent interpersonal skills and my 14 year old son was comfortable working with her one-on-one. We began the summer with an extensive list of material mostly the preterit tense that my son was expected to master before Spanish 2. Maris ...
