About Simeon

The most important attributes of any teacher are empathy and patience.

I currently attend Harvard University and work as a professional tutor and writer. I've lived and travelled all over Eastern and Western Europe, Scotland, and many parts of the United States.

My scores on the SAT and ACT were perfect (2400 and 36 respectively), though I too had to work hard to get there, so I know what it's like when you're just starting out.

Over the years, I've worked with kids suffering from ADD and ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, depression, autism, and speech disorders; I personally grew up inured to social anxiety, so I can always empathize.

Nowadays, tutors will tell you they know all the tricks and shortcuts. But really, there are no tricks. No shortcuts. Just hard work and sleepless nights and talking to yourself while brushing your teeth in the morning trying to remember the quadratics formula.

*****************************************************

I have a decade of experience and a vast collection of study materials that I can share with you for free. I used to work for Kaplan, and to date I've taught everything from Debate and Creative Writing to Calculus and the MCATs. I tutor the ASVAB, LSAT, GRE, GMAT and most of the SAT II exams as well, in case you are headed for a school that requires those.

I absolutely love writing, of course, so I can also teach you how to write an action scene or listen to a poem.

*****************************************************

What I expect from my students: studying is serious business. We'll write essays. We'll analyze passages. We will laugh in the face of all that is boring about standardized tests. Analytical reading and writing can be a lot of fun, actually.

In the end, my paradigm as a teacher will always be to make myself progressively unnecessary.

Your daughter is an amazing student. She is diligent, persistent, and deeply creative. She'll probably grow up to cure cancer. Or invent cold fusion. Or both!

"Extremely patient and knowledgeable!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT English section will test your ability to write, read, and detect subtle errors in various passages. You will need to master both common writing conventions (such as proper use of the comma and semicolon) and more advanced grammatical concepts (who vs whom, irregular past participles, etc.)

ACT Math

The ACT Math is significantly more comprehensive than that of the SAT. Subjects covered include Trigonometry, Algebra 2, Geometry, Probability, and Statistics.

I have all the necessary study materials, including half a dozen actual ACT tests, so you will not need to purchase extra books.

ACT Reading

The ACT reading section is similar to that of the SAT, though it trades vocabulary for stiffer time constraints.

I have all the necessary study materials, including half a dozen actual ACT tests, so you will not need to purchase extra books.

ACT Science

The ACT science section covers basic chemistry, physics, and biology. Although technically, you don't actually need to know much about these subjects to be successful on the test.

Every clue you need to solve a problem is provided in the question, and some clever sleuthing is often all you need to get the answer.

Algebra 1

An introduction to algebra includes topics such as linear equations, ratios, quadratic equations, special factorizations, complex numbers, graphing linear and quadratic equations, linear and quadratic inequalities, functions, polynomials, exponents and logarithms, absolute value, sequences and series, and more!

Algebra 2

In addition to the standard Algebra 2 and Precalculus curriculums, I tutor advanced topics, such as problem solving strategies for success on the AMC and AIME competitions.

English

This is my favorite subject. I've personally read a few thousand books and written more essays than I can possibly remember.

Geometry

I tutor geometry topics such as quadrilaterals, polygons, circles, three-dimensional geometry, transformations, trigonometry, etc.

GMAT

I've earned a perfect score on the GMAT, which is significantly tougher than the SAT.

Grammar

Grammar is a bit like math, and a lot of it's quite intuitive!

LSAT

My favorite standardized test. I think it's quite fun, actually! Logic, reasoning, and instinct go into solving every problem.

MCAT

Currently, I tutor the Verbal portion of the MCAT. Throughout the years I've accumulated a vast collection of study materials, including 7 previously administered tests which I am happy to share.

I think taking the MCAT can be quite fun!

SAT Reading

The SAT Reading section is deceptively straightforward. There are tropes of questions that appear again and again and can be mastered with basic reading and comprehension strategies.

I have all the study materials you would ever need, including half a dozen actual, previously administered SAT tests, so you shouldn't need to purchase extra books.

SAT Writing

The SAT Writing section will test your ability to read, write, and detect subtle errors in various passages.

You will need to master both common writing conventions (such as proper use of the comma and semicolon) and more advanced grammatical concepts (subjunctive voice, irregular past participles, etc.)

I have all the necessary study materials, including a dozen actual, previously administered SAT tests, so you will not need to purchase extra books.

The SAT Writing section is my favorite component of the test. I think it's somewhat relaxing and fun!

Vocabulary

As Mark Twain said, "The difference between the right word and the almost-right word is the difference between the lightning and the lightning-bug."

Writing

Though I go to school and teach for a living, I'm also a writer. Last year I published my first novel. Creative and analytical writing appeal to me especially, not to mention fiction.
