Hi, I'm Carolyn! I recently graduated (May 2020) cum laude from a boarding high school in PA, and I am planning to major in Biology at the University of Pennsylvania this Fall. In school, I found that having teachers who made the classes more enjoyable pushed me to develop a strong interest in that class, regardless of the subject. A simple example is that in my US History class, rather than doing traditional lectures and asking us to memorize dates and events, my teacher made the class very engaging by asking us to analyze primary sources and then holding small group seminars in our discussion-based course design. Thus, I want to emulate this approach in my classroom by making content both comprehensible and engaging.

As a teacher, I express my creativity through designing classes for visual and kinesthetic learners –– focusing on inquiry-based learning and active engagement for my students. I lead my classes by personalizing content and telling stories to connect with students’ lives. In turn, my students develop the kind of creative thinking that learning requires.

I nurture my students' curiosity in learning, helping them develop creative solutions through spontaneous thinking. Thus, I’m creative in the classroom –– seeking different innovative approaches to teaching –– while simultaneously fostering my students’ creativity. As a teacher, I aspire to create an environment where students can independently and flexibly use their critical thinking skills and their imaginations to visualize the world around us.

Experiences: Over the past few years in high school, I have frequently tutored students both in and outside of my school on a variety of subjects. At school, I was a Tutoring Fellow for 3 years, where I worked with underclassmen who needed additional assistance on their school work in Math, Science, and English. I held several extra help sessions each week for them. Outside of school, I designed a hands-on STEM teaching project, where I travelled to RangTang, Tibet, and introduced science experiments
