About Tia

After teaching third grade in the State College Area School District for six years, I moved into the private tutoring sector and became the full-time director at the Huntington Learning Center. After having my first baby in March of 2015, I chose to take the opportunity to stay home with my daughter full-time. I definitely miss the world of teaching and helping others and am anxious to find a way to back into it!

Through my elementary experience, I learned a lot about differentiation and tailoring a lesson or concept to an individual learner and/or vast amounts of learning styles. During my time at Huntington, I was able to freshen up on my math skills and work with students of all ages, college-level included. I had very little experience working with older students, but grew to really enjoy their personalities and the new challenge it brought to my teaching talent.

I graduated PSU with a degree in Elementary and Kindergarten Education, but I also became certified to teach mathematics for grades 7-12 due to my knowledge and mathematical skill. I completed the coursework towards my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership, as well. Through the Huntington program, I also became a certified SAT and ACT instructor. With the changes that are taking place with the SAT, I don't feel as quite prepared to take on an SAT student though at this time unless minor remediation is required.

As stated above, I am additionally certified to teach mathematics for grades 7-12 due to my knowledge and mathematical skill. I took several courses in college similar to those that math ed students complete in order to prepare myself for the certification exam. I was able to pass the test on the first try, thanks to the skills I retained. In addition, throughout my time at Huntington, I had several opportunities to work with Pre Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II and Advanced Algebra II, Pre Calculus, and College level Calculus students. Along with that, I worked with a lot of students prepping for the SAT/ ACT math sections and utilized a lot of the same skills during those sessions as well. Because of my background as an Elementary teacher, I'm able to identify gaps in students skills since I know the precise skills that must be attained throughout their elementary and middle school careers.

I'm a very motivated teacher, and I work to find strategies that connect with every learner!

As a math teacher, my main goal in helping your child is to, not only expose them to algorithms and strategies that may be utilized, but to also help your child understand what kind of learner he or she is and how he/she can be successful in math, as well as other subjects he/she takes in school.

When working with elementary students, I work to make all of our lessons fun and intriguing in some way, if possible. My main goal is to help your child build confidence about his/her skills, as well as instill him/her with the motivation to do well. In addition, I focus on helping your child understand what type of a learner he/she is and teach him/her strategies based on his/her learning style to be successful in his/her academic career. By identifying gaps in his or her learning, I'm able to help your child move forward and not just offer a bandaid fix for the year!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

In 2008, I graduated with my degree in Elementary and Kindergarten education from Penn State. I taught 3rd grade in the State College area school district for 6 years, and was the center director at Huntington Learning center in state college for two years. I've experienced students of all ages and grade levels since I started my student teaching in 2007, and the tutoring center forced me to know everything about every grade level in order to help our students succeed.
