I'm a graduate of West Virginia University with a Master's Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in Education Administration. I am a certified teacher in West Virginia and teach a variety of subjects that fall under social studies such as history (all regions and time periods), economics, political science, sociology, and psychology. My age group that I'm certified for is 7-12, but I also work with college students.
I have taught and worked with students from different backgrounds, abilities, and interests. I also have worked with many international students at WVU, teaching an orientation class and providing cultural counseling. Working with international students showed me how different students are and how their needs can be very different also. So, I have adopted a teaching style that varies for each student and subject. I prefer a more relaxed and informal student-teacher relationship. Each student needs to be individually evaluated for strengths, weaknesses, and interests. From there, I want to tailor sessions and lessons to fit that student. I like to explore new ways of learning. It's important to capture the student's interest and enthusiasm. I love helping students, nothing feels better than a student telling me that he/she got that "A" - it feels like I won the lottery. My daughter has been fortunate to work with several excellent Wyzant tutors over the years, but this semester we hit the jackpot! Catharine S. agreed to tutor my daughter to prepare her for several Praxis II exams for her Elementary Education certification. Catharine's teaching experience has definitely played a key role in her effectiveness, but it is all the "extra" preparation time that she does on her own time to find ways to present the information in the most effective manner for my daughter that takes her over the top! Catharine has used all the materials my daughter had purchased such as ebook study guides, flash cards, online tests and helped her get the maximum benefit from those study tools. The personal interest that Catharine has shown in my daughter's success has helped tremendously to increase my daughter's confidence in her ability to pass these tests. She still has several tests ahead of her, but I feel confident that as long as Catharine is her tutor that she will be successful. Catharine has the perfect blend of knowledge, empathy and humor that enables her to relate to her students in such an effective way. My daughter and I feel very lucky to have found her. I can not recommend her highly enough!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have two master degrees, one is Education and the other is Education Administration. Career Development was one of my supporting fields that I studied in Education Administration. And I worked at the West Virginia University Career and Counseling Center.
I have a master's in education and am a teacher. And now I have tutored and prepped several students for the Praxis, which are state board tests to get a teaching certificate. I also have bought and studied the official study guides for the Praxis.
I have had several classes in grad school on improving study skills with students. And I have been tutoring students, ranging from middle school to college, on study skills. I have been working on study skills with students, now for about seven years. I am a teacher with a master's in education.
