I've worked in education for over 8 years now, Before that I had a 25-year career as a Financial Computer Programmer and was fortunate to work through the great Y2K years and the DotCom creation and craze. I have a range of math skills from Algebra I through Pre-Calculus II. I have worked in Multiple High Schools, serving students in college

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra is a great class and the beginning of understanding procedures in Mathematics. A great deal of students are excellent in Arithmetic and have a hard time transitioning into Algebra. They did great in elementary school and are now frustrated they are not doing as well in math today.

I enjoy working with these students and utilize their previous skills and teaching them new ones to build their confidence and have them succeed.

I am a certified High School Mathematics and Special Education teacher working in Bloomfield at the Westbridge Academy. I have taught/co-taught every level of High School mathematics from pull-out Algebra to Pre-Calculus II and enjoyed teaching them all.

Algebra 2 is an important class that uses the concepts learned in Geometry to enter into the advance topics of Algebra 2. This course reinforces and advances the skills learned in Algebra 1 and introduces student to solving problems involving exponents and logarithms along with complex numbers and graphing and solving problems with conic sections.

Students need to have their confidence built by utilizing the skills they learned and encouragement to excel in the new topics. I enjoy working with these students giving them the confidence they need by reinforcing their skills and ensuring they succeed and feel confident with the knowledge they are learning.

Geometry is a great class that brings a visual and spacial aspect to Mathematics. Student here utilize their Algebra skills and apply them both plane and coordinate Geometry. Student are taught to use proofs and postulates to determine congruent triangles, corresponding angles of parallel and perpendicular lines, and similar polygons.

Students here need to have their confidence built by utilizing the skills they learned and applying them to the special aspect of Geometry. I enjoy working with these students as they discover critical thinking utilizing proofs and postulates and building confidence as they succeed and apply the knowledge they are learning.

Pre-Algebra students are either younger students or a student who is struggling in mathematics. Either way, tutoring must occur with expectations that I am working with a student who is transitioning from Arithmetic to Algebra.

The biggest difference in Pre-Algebra is the introduction of functions and handling mathematics problems in a structure procedural manner. Student who were great at earlier math could easily 'pop' the answer doing it just in their heads. These students have a problem transitioning to using paper and pencil and having to keep track of their progress in the problem and building up to an answer.

I enjoy working with these students and getting them to understand what math is all about and how then need to do well and use those grades to develop a great career. I work with them to develop an approach and understanding of how to work with math and how to succeed in Math going forward.

I have a solid background in Algebra I, Geometry I, and Algebra II. These are the foundation classes that Pre-Calc is based on. I am also in the higher classes of Pre-Calc I and Pre-Calc II and have a thorough knowledge of the material.

When Tutoring students I go over the applications of Mathematics in Business. I let them know that Colleges and Businesses, especially the higher paying postions, expect candidate that excelled in Math. Going over how I used my Mathematics background to secure jobs and how resumes are selected based on levels of education and grades I find students more receptive to learning math.

Students must want to learn math at this level to be sucessful at it. My favorite Math Topic is Unit Circle Trigonometry. It's my favorite because it combines the topics of geometry, standard triangles, trigonometry, proportions, and linear programming. This is the toughest topic a student faces before calculus and it a determining factor for someone who is serious about their education and selecting a career that is requires math.

I spend a great deal of time explaining how to solve the problems and importance of this topic. I see more students rethink their mathematics education after this topic and work my best to get them through this topic and the other complex ones in Pre-Calc.

The SATs are a great set of test that really show the critical thinking and problem solving skills of a student. The Math sections use skill developed in Algebra I and II and Geometry to solve complex and difficult word problems. The skills needed to do well on this test involve both test taking strategies and subject matter expertise. Students need to remember that the questions are not based solely on just one discipline but span several disciplines and students need to be exposed to these type of problems to gain the skill they need to solve them. .

To prepare for the tutoring students I went through the book "The Official SAT Study Guide" written by the College Board which contains the most accurate questions representing the SAT test. There are ten complete sample tests in the book and I have accurately answered all questions from the math sections of these tests. I have worked out each problems and annotated key problems that require the most tutoring for the student.

I have written power points breaking down the knowledge needed to solve these problems and the best approach to answering them on the test. Each tutoring session focuses on covering one of these topics and going over the results of one of the sample tests.

My tutoring goal is to prepare the student to take the test having all the knowledge needed for the test along with test taking strategies using feedback from the sample tests. I believe this is the best approach to preparing the student to succeed on the SATs.
