Kean University Union, NJ (English)
I've always liked playing a part in the success of students and people in general, making a positive difference in the lives of people who are trying to improve themselves. I not only want to teach them to pass their tests and do well in school, but empower them with studying and researching strategies that will carry over to their careers and lives.
Besides teaching in schools and tutoring privately, I worked in supervising and training positions with several companies, which gives me the knowledge of how to help people advance at their jobs by sharpening their communication skills. Currently, I tutor all phases of English as well as preparing students in the English part of SAT tests. Also, last year I became certified to teach English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) while attending TESOL of Costa Rica. While there, I created numerous lesson plans and activities, teaching members of the local community at the beginner level. Furthermore, just recently, I attended the Costa Rica Language Academy for two months and received a diploma at the intermediate Spanish-speaking level; therefore, I would welcome the opportunity to teach English to Spanish speakers or people of different nationalities.
In addition, I like to engage my students in activities and learning games that I create, or through the use of interactive websites that make learning fun. I believe in the old Benjamin Franklin quote: "Tell me and I will forget it. Show me and I will remember it. Involve me and I will learn it." Moreover, I hold myself accountable for each lesson I teach, and since I am a perpetual learner I value feedback from students, parents, and businesses. I think it is important for every teacher to evaluate and reflect on his or her performance and to make improvements.
Also, to ensure students a quiet and comfortable study space, I will travel to their homes or I have the use of study labs.
Hence, I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your goals. Be well! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Besides majoring in English and receiving a degree in it, I have taught reading and all phases of English for many years. Also, I have worked as a journalist for newspapers, writing, reading, and editing copy. Recently, I became certified to teach English to speakers of other languages and much of the instruction centers around developing reading skills.
