Bio

My passion for learning has encouraged me, throughout my life, to vigorously pursue activities that inspire growth in literacy, in myself and others. Whether that activity is reading, writing, selecting a piece of literature (whether it be a book, a magazine, a newspaper, or a flyer), or engaging in a visually stimulating activity that will promote reading proficiency, any effort that I may make towards my ability to learn has strengthened my understanding of myself and the world around me....

My passion for learning has encouraged me, throughout my life, to vigorously pursue activities that inspire growth in literacy, in myself and others. Whether that activity is reading, writing, selecting a piece of literature (whether it be a book, a magazine, a newspaper, or a flyer), or engaging in a visually stimulating activity that will promote reading proficiency, any effort that I may make towards my ability to learn has strengthened my understanding of myself and the world around me.

I believe that the path to literacy for a child begins in the womb of the mother. When the mother-to-be reads out loud to her unborn baby, the unborn child can hear the vibrations of her voice and recognize the sound of the words and be able to pick up on the same sounds once a newborn. Once the child is born, it is important to read and speak to him or her, because the basics of literacy is made up of not just reading and writing, but also speaking and listening. When a child listens to the parent reading and speaking to him or her, it builds the child's vocabulary intake, and that child is able to speak and recognize words that they would not know if the parent had not taken the time to read to him or her. This helps the child grow into an adolescent who loves learning, and will encourage that adolescent to seek learning well into adulthood.

I believe that everyone has the ability to read and write, and if that ability is coupled with the proper support, guidance, and environment to encourage them to feel positive about their journey to educate themselves, they will be able to achieve all of their goals in life, as long as they are realistic about those goals. I believe that reading is the gateway to all other forms of learning and education. I believe that there exists many different types of learners, and it is okay if one method that is used by one student, cannot be used by another, because the path to the learning process is individualized based upon the needs of the student.

I am able to read, write, and speak Standard American English (SAE) at a very fluent and proficient level. I have been able to do this for most of my life. I was raised in an environment where learning was encouraged and a very high priority was placed on obtaining a formal education. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology with a concentration in Literature and Writing. I also briefly completed some coursework at the graduate level in the field of Early Childhood Education.

My relevant experience in tutoring and teaching involves a customized approach to each individual, taking into account each person's level of capability, enthusiasm about the selected material, and unique learning needs. I am willing to help someone that may be in need of an intelligent, compassionate, and reliable tutor that they can trust. An understanding of what makes all individuals connected in some way, and respect for what makes them different, regarding their physical, social, cultural, and linguistic background is essential in assessing each student. If you have trouble reading or writing and need someone knowledgeable, yet patient, to work with in acquiring skills in these subjects, please do not hesitate to contact me to schedule a lesson.
